DOM faculty members named 2024 ASCI Young Physician Awardees

Congratulations to DOM faculty members, Sivasubramanium Bhavani, MD, MS  (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine), and Michael Woodworth, MD, MSc, FIDSA  (Infectious Diseases), on being named 2024 ASCI Young Physician Awardees! The Young Physician-Scientist Awards (YPSA) recognizes up to 50 physician-scientists annually who are early in their first faculty appointment and have made notable achievements in their research.

Study participants needed for flu vaccine study

Who? Healthy males and non-pregnant females between 18 and 64 years of age, who have not received a seasonal flu vaccine for the current year.

Why? We are studying immune responses to flu vaccination in blood and bone marrow.

Where? All study visits will be held in a clinical research unit at Emory University Hospital.

What? Participants will have health screenings, blood draws, blood tests, bone marrow sampling, and physical exams by licensed health professionals before and after receiving an FDA-approved flu vaccine (flu vaccine will be given as part of this study).

There will be a total of eight study visits over a year including three bone marrow draws/aspirates at the day 0, day 28, and day 365 visits.

Participants will be compensated up to a total of $950 for completion of all scheduled study visits. Participants will receive parking vouchers.

Join us for the Emory Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) and Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) Symposium on March 23, 2024. This program, led by Bryan Wells, MD, will provide an overview of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) and Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). It will feature presentations by experts in cardiology, vascular medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and more. The event is open to patients and their families, friends, and healthcare providers.

Strengthening Capacity of Central Asia and Eastern Europe Countries to Implement Sustainable and Effective HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, and Treatment and Health Security Programs under PEPFAR

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to enhance Central Asia's capacity to provide high-quality HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, laboratory, and strategic information (SI) programs. 

Understanding Mechanisms and Outcomes of Trained Immunity (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Deadlines: 30 days prior (LOI); June 5, 2024; October 5, 2024; June 5, 2025; October 5, 2025; June 5, 2036; October 5, 2026

The purpose of this FOA is to support research that improves understanding of basic mechanisms and biomarkers of trained immunity (i.e., innate immune memory), plus the functional implications of trained immunity, related to 1) immune system development and function, 2) immunity to vaccines or natural infections, or 3) allergic diseases, autoimmunity, or rejection of organ/tissue/cell transplantation. 

High Priority HIV and Substance Use Research (RM1 Clinical Trial Optional)
Deadlines: 30 days prior (LOI); August 15, 2024; February 11, 2025; August 15, 2025; February 11, 2026; August 14, 2026; February 11, 2027
The purpose of this FOA is to open new areas of basic and clinical HIV/AIDS research and/or lead to new avenues for prevention, treatment, and cure of HIV among people who use addictive substances.

The Georgia CTSA Grant Wise service offers the opportunity for one-on-one feedback from experienced senior faculty on grant writing. Receive support with developing a timeline, reviewing specific aims, writing/editing the text, and responding to reviewers. Grant Wise is available to faculty of institutions within the Georgia CTSA - Emory, Georgia Tech, MSM, & UGA.

Janice Lea (Renal Medicine) received funding from Vertex Pharmaceutical Inc. for a project entitled, “A phase 2/3 adaptive, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of VX-147 in adult and pediatric subjects with APOL1-mediated proteinuric kidney disease.”

Frances Eun-Hyung Lee (PI, Pulmonary), Doan Nguyen (Co-I, Pulmonary), and Carlos Castrillon (Co-I, Rheumatology) received funding from NIAID for a project entitled, “Molecular mechanisms of human long-lived plasma cell generation in the bone marrow and spleen.”

Igho Ofotokun (PI) and Jesse Waggoner (Co-I) (Infectious Diseases) received funding from NYU/NHLBI for a project entitled, “Long COVID in the eye (LoCEYE) study with the RECOVER Initiative.”

Modele Ogunniyi (Cardiology) received funding from University of Michigan/ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for a project entitled, “The impact of an adaptive patient-centered web application on medication optimization in HFrEF patients.”
