Introducing the 2024 Community Engaged Scholarship Forum Honorees

Each year at the Community Engaged Scholarship Forum (CESF), Pitt elevates and reflects on collective approaches to community-engaged scholarship at the University by providing an opportunity for faculty, staff and community members to present their community-engaged work, discover new avenues of partnership and network with those who do similar work.

The forum also celebrates students, faculty and staff who have significantly impacted their communities.

The March 5 forum, themed “Beyond a Thousand Points of Light,” featured a full day of speakers and workshops, including keynote speaker Erin McDonald, the lead for the federal plan for equitable long-term recovery and resilience in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, and plenary speaker James Huguley, associate professor in the School of Social Work. A deans panel featured School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Dean Anthony Delitto, Bettye J. and Ralph E. Bailey Dean of the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and College of General Studies Adam Leibovich, School of Public Health Dean Maureen Lichtveld and Graduate School of Public and International Affairs Dean Carissa Slotterback.

Undergraduate Policy and Social Impact Fellows Poster Session

Join Pitt's Graduate School of Public & International Affairs on Friday, April 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Pitt Global Hub – 1st Floor Posvar Hall (230 S. Bouquet St.) for their undergraduate poster session on policy and social impact. Each fellow teamed in groups of 3-4 around specific topics like homelessness, fire prevention, policing and world affairs. No registration needed. A light breakfast will be provided.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Pitt

OLLI at Pitt is hosting an informational session for their 2025 trip to Finland. The trip to Finland will be March 1-8, 2025. Register for the Finland information session.

Pitt Sustainability Awards Luncheon

Join Pitt Sustainability as they will be honoring this year's awardees who have made an extraordinary impact on sustainability at Pitt.The luncheon will take place on Friday, April 19 at 12 p.m. in the O'Hara Student Center Ballroom. Pitt Sustainability will be honoring faculty, staff and students throughout campus. Registration required.

Per Scholas PIttsburgh IT Support Training Program

IT Support offers the opportunity to earn the Google IT Support Professional Certificate and the CompTIA A+ certification, equipping you with the knowledge to fill a wide range of entry-level technology jobs. This is a recommended starting point for learners with no previous tech work experience or coursework. The program offers training and job connections at no cost to you. This is a 12-15 week training session. Apply by April 15 to enroll for the session beginning April 29. After April, the next session is in August 2024. Application required.

Sustainable Pittsburgh Teaming List

Sustainable Pittsburgh is administering a teaming list for southwestern Pennsylvania organizations to complement and support efforts to maximize collaboration in the region. The list will support collective action in the 10-county region of southwestern Pennsylvania among entities considering applying for funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grant program, the Community Change Grants program.

New Sun Rising: Vibrancy Portal

The Vibrancy Portal was created by NSR for organizations and collaboratives that want to be more competitive for resources, and research shows that adopting a high data culture can increase funding opportunities, create stronger internal and external relationships, and lead to more effective operations. Metropolitan Universities, "Productive Tensions and Uncomfortable Conversations

Metropolitan Universities special journal issue, "Productive Tensions and Uncomfortable Conversations," published in collaboration with the Place-Based Justice Network, is out now. This issue looks at the challenges and obstacles to equitable and anti-racist place-based community engagement in higher education. The issue is available online.

Community Engagement Professional Credential Information Session

On May 2 from 2:00 p.m. to  3:00 p.m. EDT, Join Campus Compact for an informal informational session about the Community Engagement Professional Credentialing Program. In the first half of this session you'll learn more about the competency areas, the application process, associated learning opportunities, and the path to full certification. The second half will be reserved for answering participant questions and providing applicant assistance. Registration required.

Community Engagement Huddle: Writing About Community Engaged Work

The Community Engagement Huddle is open to individuals from CUMU member institutions who seek to explore key issues in community engagement, learn how others are effectively navigating those issues, and discuss our own challenges and successes. The session will be presented by Diane Doberneck, Michigan State University, on Tuesday, April 23 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m ET. This session will explore writing about your community engaged work, what we can write about and how to get started. Registration required.

NASPA Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement Meeting

Each year, the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement conference brings together faculty, student affairs administrators, students, senior campus leaders, and community partners to advance institutions' commitment to advancing democracy. This year's event will take place from June 5-7 in Detroit, MI. Registration closes May 13.

IARSLCE Community-Engaged Research Webinars

IARSLCE is pleased to present a four-part spring webinar series to explore contemporary and cutting edge approaches to community-engaged research. We invite you to learn about youth participatory action research, data literacy and quantitative analysis of big data, trends and gaps in community-engaged dissertation research, and Carnegie Co-Labs. Sessions will include interactive conversations, as well as dynamic presentations by scholars in our field. Part 2 takes place April 23 at 2:30 p.m. ET. Part 3 takes place May 15 at 6 p.m. ET. Part 4 is still to be scheduled.

Mark your calendars for unity and fun with the Garden of Different Abilities! The 4th Annual Walk, Talk & Roll Rally takes place on Saturday, May 11 at OneValley at the Roundhouse (4165 Blair Street. Pitt Jazz Wednesday on the Hill will be honoring Pittsburgh Pianist Sonny Clark on Wednesday, April 24 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Pitt's Community Engagment Center in the Hill District. 

On Wednesday, May 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Pitt Jazz Wednesday on the Hill will be honoring Jimmy Ponder and George Benson.

These concerts are free and open to the public and take place at the Community Engagement Center in the Hill District located at 1908 Wylie Ave, PIttsburgh, PA 15219.

There are 10 spots left for the Archives & Special Collections event on Preserving Family Treasures by Anais Grateu and Miriam Meislik. The event takes place at the Community Engagment Center in Homewood on Thursday, May 2 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. 

The Archives & Special Collections department at the University of Pittsburgh Library System will offer a workshop dedicated to the preservation of family archives at the CEC in Homewood. This 90-minute workshop includes a short presentation about techniques you can use at home to take care of your family archives and artifacts and a Q&A session where you will have the opportunity to ask questions about material you would like to preserve, display, or learn more about. Participants are invited to bring one small item for preservation evaluation and guidance. Participants will also be able to bring home a small archival kit. Advance registration is required.
