I hope you all join me and watch them compete in the University of Adelaide Final on the 10th September in the Braggs Theatre as part of Research Tuesday. The winner will attend the Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT Semi-Final on the 8th October. As we can see in our Exit Survey, it’s not only the 3MT competition that you enjoy doing. Presenting at a national and international conference is one of the highlights of everyone’s research degree journey. To make this dream come though, we encourage you to plan ahead, check for upcoming conference deadlines, explore funding opportunities and start preparing your abstracts or papers well in advance. In addition to your presentation, networking with experts in your field is the most valuable activity you can do during a conference. We have limited funds available each year in order to support some of you in this endeavour. With the middle of the year now passed, our second round of the AGRS Travel grants will open next week and close 20 September. Once open, applications can be submitted via the Career’s Hub page. The 2024 online Annual Review of Progress is now live! The 2024 Annual Review is due by no later than 31 October 2024. We ask that you check your candidature record in MyAdelaide to see whether you are required to complete this milestone. The form can be accessed from today and we encourage you to complete it as soon as possible – there is no need to wait until the due date approaches to get started. To inspire timely completion of the Annual Review, the Adelaide Graduate Research School (AGRS) is offering prizes from Just Bliss Chocolates: https://www.justbliss.com.au/ for the 1st, 50th, 100th, 200th, 300th, 400th and 500th annual reviews completed and submitted to the AGRS. An additional 3 students, randomly selected from amongst those completing their reviews prior to 31 October 2024, will also receive prizes. If you have a 2024 Annual Review milestone you are required to complete the Review, even if you currently on a Leave of Absence. Comprehensive information about the Annual Review can be found on the Adelaide Graduate Research School website, including our frequently asked questions. A virtual Annual Review Q and A session for students will be held on 29th August. Further details including the registration link will be circulated in the coming weeks and advertised on the AGRS news and events page. For those unable to attend on the day, the sessions will be recorded and made available on the AGRS website. Do not hesitate to contact the AGRS if you have any questions. 2024 Round 2 – AGRS Travel Grants The Adelaide Graduate Research School is offering Travel Grants again! The second round for 2024 will open on the 26th of August and close on the 20th of September for HDR students travelling from early October in 2024. Once open, applications can be submitted via the Career’s Hub page. Please carefully read the eligibility criteria and travel grant rules available on the Find a scholarship page before applying (when applications open). With the limited budget available, you are also highly encouraged to apply for other travel grant opportunities to fund your travel. Industry Codan Founders’ PhD Scholarship Codan, a global leader in electronics solutions, is supporting exceptional PhD candidates in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering to undertake applied research programs at the University of Adelaide, through the Codan Founders’ Scholarship program. The AGRS welcomes applications for an open opportunity under this program, for an industry PhD with Minelab, a leading manufacturer of hand-held metal detection technologies. The successful candidate will work with specialists at the University and Minelab to explore the use of semi-autonomous robots in metal detection. The successful candidate will receive a Codan Founders' Scholarship of $42,500 p.a., for 3.75 years, and undertake an internship at Minelab. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process. Aurora Foundation First Nations Cancer Scholarship The First Nations Cancer Scholarship Program is funded by the Australian Government through Cancer Australia. Established by the Aurora Education Foundation (Aurora) and Cancer Australia. The First Nations Cancer Scholarship (scholarship) will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduate students, health professionals, and early-career researchers (ECRs) to undertake full-time postgraduate study (graduate certificate, Masters or a PhD) or research in a cancer-related field. The purpose of the scholarship is to support scholars in building the skills and knowledge required to inform strategies to improve cancer outcomes for Indigenous communities and increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders in cancer-related fields. Up to four scholarships will be awarded yearly from 2024 to 2026. Administered by Aurora, each scholarship is valued at up to $120,000 AUD per year, for up to three years. Recipients will also have access to up to $5,000 AUD per year in tailored academic and wellbeing support. In addition, Aurora will facilitate community and network-building opportunities for individuals and the scholarship cohort. The Charles and Frank Fenner Research Scholarship in Geographical and Environmental Studies Here’s an exciting opportunity for HDR students in the Department of Geography, Environment and Population who need assistance with their research costs… Thanks to a generous donation by Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner, this award provides a once-off payment of up to $7,500 to an HDR student enrolled in the Department of Geography, Environment and Population. This scholarship supports research costs including but not limited to travel, equipment, data or data collection. One or more scholarships may be awarded from this funding, as determined by the selection committee based on the applications received. Applications are open until Friday 30th August 2024. Are you presenting your research at a conference? Here’s an exciting scholarship opportunity to support your conference-related travel costs… The Frank Perry Research Travel Scholarship in Engineering is available to students enrolled in the second or third year of their HDR program in Engineering. Thanks to a generous donation by The Frank and Hilda Perry Trust, this award supports travel, specifically conference registration, flights and accommodation. Elevate: Boosting Women in STEM Scholarship Applications close soon for the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering's Elevate: Boosting women in STEM scholarships for domestic postgraduate research students commencing in 2025. Elevate scholarships support women and non-binary people studying postgraduate research degrees, and aims to address gender inequities in STEM through fostering industry-academia collaborations in research and business, growing professional skills in STEM and propelling scholars into leadership. The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship was established to honour and continue the work of Dr Clare Burton, a leading researcher, public sector administrator, academic, consultant and writer on employment equity. The student will receive a $10,000 one-off payment as a research allowance. If you are a current research student at an Australian university, enrolled either full- or part-time in a research degree, pursuing research where the major piece of work is focused on gender equity, and you have completed at least the first milestone of your research degree you may be eligible to apply.
