The team at Auckland Bowls would like to wish you all a happy summer holiday!

Our clubs have resumed competitions and events, with many busily re-shuffling programmes to accommodate the shortened season.  The feedback we've received has been, 'isn't it great to get back on the greens!'  Importantly everyone is happy they can meet up with friends and family again.

We extend a big thank you to all our members, family and friends who continue to support their clubs and our Auckland Centre.  Putting aside the last four months, we've had competitive events, great sportsmanship and clubs continue to deliver terrific hospitality - we look forward to more of the same in the new year.

Auckland Centre events close the year with the Bowls3Five 1-5 Year finals on Tuesday 21 December and the Auckland Open 2-4-2 Mixed Pairs on 27-29 December. All the best wishes to all bowlers participating.

We have a lot of bowling to pack into 2022 - we cannot wait! For some, it starts with the Summerset National Singles and Pairs in Christchurch on 2-9 January 2022 – good luck bowling to all competitors.

Best wishes to you and your families - stay safe and enjoy the rest of 2021.  We look forward to seeing you on the greens in 2022.

About our clubs

Balmoral Bowling Club

Balmoral Bowling Club was formed in 1908 as the Dominion Road Bowling Club.  The name was changed in 1931 to Balmoral Bowling Club - this was a Men’s only club.  The Women's Club was formed in 1991 and shared the clubrooms and greens until the two clubs were amalgamated in 2017 to become the current Balmoral Bowling Club.

The first Auckland Centre championship was won in 1912 and success has continued over the years for club members at Auckland, National and Commonwealth levels. The highlights include Commonwealth/Empire Games Gold medals in Pairs teams for Walter Dennison in 1938 and Ted Pilkington in 1958.

Several Auckland titles have been won in recent years.  Scott Harrison won the Men's Singles in 2020 and two Mixed Pairs titles with a composite team in 2019 and 2020.  The Women’s Fours team of Linda Farley, Tina Jerrom, Chelsea Suddens and Tessa Farley won the 2021 title.  Tessa Farley won the Mixed Pairs in a composite team in 2021.

The lower green next to the clubrooms was renovated during 2021, sown in Maniatoto seed.  It will be available to play bowls in January 2022. The upper green will be renovated in the next few years. Renovations to the clubrooms are in the planning stage.

Balmoral Bowls has seen a membership increase of 18 new members for the 2021-22 season and overall we are moving forward.

Kohi's Ham Open Triples

7 December 2021
Oh, how great was it to have full greens at our first open triples of the season! It was a sea of blue amongst the uniform shades of clubs like Kohi, St Heliers, Remuera, Glendowie, Blockhouse Bay, with Carlton Cornwall's sunny gold and black standing out.

The festive attire of our friend Philly Akaruru (Bridge Park) was lucky as well as in season, as her composite team (all Junior players), Paul Neazor from Kohi and Jeff Amadia from Te Atatu taking the top spot with 4 wins, 21 ends.

Tournament sponsor Summerset Retirement Villages was represented by Frank Booth, who has been on the front lines with his staff at Ellerslie throughout lockdown. That means more swab tests than he cares to count - and all still with a smile. Frank was full of news on the progress of local construction and is looking forward to continuing sponsorship with Kohi.

Keep an eye out for upcoming St John's sessions through Summerset and a bowls exchange and our Tuesday's Open Triples in the New Year.  Find out more here.
