U.S. health officials call for booster shots against COVID-19

Published August 18

U.S. health officials recently announced plans to dispense COVID-19 booster shots to all Americans to shore up their protection amid the surging delta variant and signs that the vaccines’ effectiveness is slipping. The plan, as outlined by the chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other top health authorities, calls for an extra dose eight months after people get their second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. The doses could begin the week of Sept. 20.

Mentee Profile: Felicia Scaggs Huang, MD, MSC, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control, Cincinnati Children’s

Dr. Huang’s primary research interest is finding innovative methods to identify risk factors for and prevent transmission of nosocomial infection in critically ill children. Her current work includes identification of surgical site infection (SSI) risk in penicillin-allergic pediatric patients and modeling the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate in SSI prevention to optimize pre-operative bathing regimens.
