Champ of Champs Men's SinglesPapatoetoe Hunters Corner There were 30 Auckland Men's Singles club champions vying for the Auckland title last weekend at Papatoetoe Hunters Corner. It was warm sunny weather and the club's greens were in great condition, demonstrated by the skills and techniques the players were using during the matches. 30 players were whittled down to eight come Sunday morning. The two semi-final games were entertaining bowls and they were pretty close encounters - a great build-up to the Finals. Les Brown from Howick was delivering terrific consistent bowls throughout the two days, and it was no different heading into the Finals match. Nick Thompson from Blockhouse Bay was very consistent in the lead-up as well, but where Les was steadfast and confident with every bowl. Alas, Nick couldn't find his way through, Les proving to be too strong taking the title 21-13. Congratulations to Les for a terrific win and well done Nick for being a worthy competitor. It was good to see many clubmates, friends and family in support, a morale boost for those competitors. As bowling clubs would agree, 1-5 Year players help rejuvenate club memberships - with good guidance and coaching, 1-5s can most certainly bolster the club's teams in competitive events. On 20 March, Howick Hawks defeated Onehunga Districts to be eligible to represent the Auckland region in Hikurangi. Good luck, Howick Hawks: Roger Sadgrove, Greg Dowdell, Eddie Jones, Bruce Fenton, Linda Fenton and David Weir. Foundation coaches are diverse and are people who care about the development of bowlers, offering them an enjoyable experience that will make them want to come back for more. The day ran extremely well, and covered; the role of a coach, a participant's needs, delivery of techniques & games. Congratulations to all the attendees - we look forward to seeing you bring your newfound skills to life at your clubs. Pt Chevalier Bowls
30 April-1 May 2022
What a fantastic weekend! It is the players who make a tournament, and what a great bunch we had at our Pt Chevalier 1-8 Year Classic! Teams arrived from all over Auckland, North Harbour, Counties as well as two teams from Timaru! A familiar face, Tina Jerrom, made the trek up from Central Otago!
Teams varied in experience, from Gareth Burgess's team (Kia Toa) with mere total playing years of four to Dean Edge's side (The 'Dinosaurs') had a total of 30 playing years (out of a possible 32).
At the end of play on Saturday, there were just three unbeaten teams, front runners Te Atatu and Auckland with four wins, and Pt Chev with three wins and a draw. After six rounds, Te Atatu was in the lead winning six from six - Auckland was nipping on their heels with five wins and a draw. The Dinosaurs and Pringle Park were not far away with five wins.
A crucial game in round seven saw a battle between first and second place. The tight encounter finished 11-9 in favour of Auckland taking her to 6.5 wins, with Te Atatu remaining on six. The Dinosaurs and Pringle Park continued their winning way, bringing their tally to six, level with Te Atatu.
When the dust settled after the final 8th round, Auckland was the outright winner with 7.5 wins. The Dinosaurs & Pringle Park were tied on seven wins each, forcing a countback on ends, which saw The Dinosaurs 'edge' out Pringle Park's 63 ends to 61.
Congratulations to our place getters and a big thank you to everyone who supported our event. And of course, a big shout out to our chef, Kerri Lamb 'Chops'.

Remuera Bowls

Remuera Bowling Club opened its Undercover Winter Triples in gold medal style this Thursday. Ethan Mitchell (NZ track cyclist, three-time World Champion, Olympic Silver Medalist & Commonwealth Games Champion) joined the sponsor's team, Bayleys Real Estate. This was Ethan's first time bowling in competition and skip David Nightingale remarked: ”Ethan was a star bowler today and found his best shot – driver.”
Ethan is Bayley's High Performance Coach. A track cyclist for 16 years, Ethan thought he might have found a new competitive challenge in bowls: “Coming from a sport where you go as hard as you can as fast as you can, it is so eye-opening for that tactic not to be beneficial on the green! I have great admiration for you and for how hard this game is. Forty-two seconds is my longest track race. Playing from 9:30am to 4:00pm is a challenge to my head.”
Howick Bowling Club had the best performance this Thursday and they had their own champion on their side as well. Les Brown won the Auckland Men’s Champ of Champs Singles last weekend.

This fun event was held during the afternoon of Anzac Day. An enjoyable day for all, with the winners were Rudi Barreto and Anne Swain and the runners-up Allan Smith and Jo Crooks. The event was kindly sponsored by Wayne Maguire of Ray White Real Estate, Mission Bay. Wayne’s involvement with the Services has given him a special fondness for Anzac Day, and he always sponsors this event. He donated the prizes and ran a short quiz on matters to do with the Services.
Previously known as ‘Closing Day' but renamed because we never close! It was a fun day with a large turnout of members - bowls to music, food, and drink, a great way to close the summer season.
Amongst the highlights was recognising Roger Seaton for his valued contributions to SHBC. Roger gets his name etched on the Elliot Memorial Trophy for a second time. Of course, Roger acknowledged and thanked the numerous club volunteers who get the jobs done day-to-day and season-to-season.
Richard Kempthorne & Roger Johnston both received their Gold Stars for winning 10 Club titles.
