Positive membership trend

Dear ZELLCHEMING members,

While the preparations for the ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2023 from June 20 to 22 at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden keep us on our toes and the exhibition takes more shape with each passing day, the activities to advertise for participation in the association are also paying off: We can welcome 20 new members this month and are very happy about this positive development!

Particularly noteworthy in this context is the high proportion of new recruits, which is certainly also due to the recent presentations of the association's activities in Munich and Darmstadt by Petra Hanke and myself. The short interview with our newcomer Christin Joachim from Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel below also shows that opening up our technical committees to guests is a step that can strengthen the positive external effect and encourage participation - just like the combination of the association's work with the Expo technical program!

We very much hope that the good run will be further strengthened in the course of the ZELLCHEMING CAREER DAY on the third Expo day (June 22). For students and trainees, the ZELLCHEMING CAREER DAY offers direct and uncomplicated access to companies in the pulp and paper industry. Companies can pitch their vacancies and internships directly on site or offer cooperation for final theses. Young professionals thus have the opportunity to get to know different companies (both on the manufacturers' and suppliers' side) and to get an idea of what they are like. An exciting lecture program gives the CAREER DAY its structure, this is flanked by numerous side activities.  These include, for example, a resume check & guide for social media profiles, but also a "paper rally" with a raffle. Please also carry the information about this special format into your companies, it is worth it:

Then I would like to point out two important practical aspects around Expo 2023: Please remember to register on our platform Talque (please check your unknown senders or spam folders if the invitation mail does not arrive in your mailbox) and to secure tickets for the Summer Evening in time (already now a good part of the ticket contingent is allocated).

We are already looking forward to seeing you again in Wiesbaden!

Deputy Chairwoman of the ZELLCHEMING Association

In memoriam Dr. Winfried Haible

The ZELLCHEMING association mourns the death of Dr. Winfried Haible, born on August 18, 1934, and passed away in his 89th year on April 21, 2023, after a long and fulfilling life.

Already active in the associations of the paper and pulp industry in Baden-Wurttemberg during his legal training since December 1961, Dr. Winfried Haible was first in-house counsel, then a member of the management and, since April 1968, sole managing director of the employers' associations of the paper industry in Baden-Wurttemberg, as well as an executive board member of today's Förderverein Papierzentrum Gernsbach - FÖP - e. V. After the successful merger of the five regional employers' and trade associations of the paper and pulp industry in Baden-Wurttemberg and the founding of the Baden-Wurttemberg Paper Associations - BWP - he was its first Chief Executive Officer from January 1973.

During his decades of activity on the mother soil of the Gernsbach papermaking center, Dr. Haible also felt closely connected to the ZELLCHEMING association and contributed to the benefit of the association with impulses of various kinds. On the occasion of the 93rd Annual General Meeting in 1998, the ZELLCHEMING Association awarded honorary membership to Dr. Haible in recognition of his life's work in the service and for the benefit of the German paper industry.

Our thoughts are with the relatives of Dr. Winfried Haible and in particular with his wife Elke Haible-Pankow. We will always honor his memory.

Good reasons for a ZELLCHEMING membership

Christin Joachim, Technical Organization/Technical Controlling, Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel GmbH & Co. KG

  • What role does the paper, pulp or fiber-based industry play for you/your company?
I have been working at Papier- und Kartonfabrik in Varel since writing my bachelor's thesis. Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel produces corrugated paper and board from recovered paper, making our products the heart of sustainable packaging solutions.

  • What made you decide to become a ZELLCHEMING member?

Last year, together with the University of Oldenburg, we organized a so-called "Data Challenge", in which students apply Data Science methods to generate added value for practical applications from large amounts of data. We provided sensor data from one of our machines for this competition. Based on the reports of our participation, I was initially invited as a guest to the DATA expert committee to report on our experiences with this format. It quickly became apparent there that I found the exchange within the technical committee interesting and valuable, so I wanted to become a member myself and get involved.

Christin Joachim

  • How would you like to get involved with ZELLCHEMING?
I would like to continue to be involved in the DATA expert committee and am particularly interested in how we can advance topics of digitalization and data science in the sense of gaining knowledge from data in the paper industry and use them in a promising way. We will also be making a joint presentation on this topic at the ZELLCHEMING-Expo on June 20 from 2 p.m. onwards.

Pulp and paper producers take stock of their investments in climate protection measures

Since 2005, CO2 emissions from the pulp and paper sector have been reduced by 36%. By substituting fossil products, the European forest industry reduces total EU emissions by an estimated 410 million tons of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to saving 85 million cars - or the entire vehicle population registered in Germany and Italy. The 4th edition of REINVEST2050 offers insight into the implementation of these targets through a collection of testimonials from pulp and paper industry players.

At the fourth edition of its flagship clean production technologies event, REINVEST2050, the forest fiber and paper industry presented 15 transformative projects completed in the last two years. They all have in common that they have either successfully reduced emissions from paper mills or developed products that provide alternatives to fossil products, contributing to the greening of the EU economy. Nearly 70 innovative cases from the four editions of the REINVEST2050 reports since 2017 now form a rich library of best practices for the sector to learn from and build on.

Relative to its size, the pulp and paper sector is among the largest investors in the EU in projects aimed at bringing the manufacturing sector in line with Europe's goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Some of these projects are documented in a brochure submitted to the EU institutions. They took place in an environment unfavorable to cleantech investment. Investment decisions have recently been influenced by several factors, including rising EU carbon prices in the context of a global race for green subsidies, skyrocketing raw material and energy costs, and regulatory uncertainty.

Workshop Hydrogen in the Pulp and Paper Industry

As part of the ZELLCHEMING-Expo from June 20-22, 2023 at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden, Germany, we are looking forward to the workshop "Hydrogen in the Pulp and Paper Industry"!

The workshop will be presented and moderated by Daniel Klüh, research associate at the Chair of Renewable Energies at the Straubing Campus of the Technical University of Munich.

Hydrogen is currently a very present and controversial topic. This workshop, which is addressed to all visitors of the ZELLCHEMING-Expo, will show the participants possibilities for the use of hydrogen in the pulp and paper industry. The focus will be on the production of fuels and chemicals (using CO2) and the combustion of hydrogen for heat generation. The aim of the workshop is to sensitize participants to the topic and to highlight controversial points of these technologies. The workshop will consist of lectures as well as interactive case studies where participants will discuss technical, economic as well as environmental aspects of hydrogen use.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the technologies of hydrogen production via electrolysis, CO2 capture, and conversion of H2 and CO2 to chemicals and fuels. It will then use a pulp mill as an example to show how the production of chemicals or fuels can affect the energy system of a pulp mill. In the first interactive part of the workshop, the integration of a power-to-methanol plant into an exemplary paper mill is calculated. Based on simplified mass, energy and CO2 balances, critical areas of the process will be highlighted.

In the second part of the workshop, the use of hydrogen as a fuel in tissue paper production will be considered. In the case study, the use of hydrogen will be compared and evaluated with other technologies.

Date:
Tuesday, June 20

From the technical committees

New leadership for the Technical Committee Chemical Additives (CHAD)

The ZELLCHEMING Technical Committee CHAD met at the end of March at UPM Nordland in Dörpen. One of the items on the agenda was the election of a new leadership team: Prof. Dr. Stephan Kleemann had stepped down from office and Prof. Dr. Emanuele Martorana, his successor, was unanimously elected as the new chairman of the CHAD Technical Committee. Antje Kersten was also unanimously elected as deputy, as was Prof. Dr. Jürgen Belle, who continues to serve as secretary. All involved wished their newly elected representatives success in their future work!

The next meeting of the Technical Committee CHAD will take place during the ZELLCHEMING-Expo at the RMCC Wiesbaden.

C Square with guest lecture at the Technical Committee Microbiology (MBIO)

The Technical Committee Microbiology (TC MBIO) is pleased to welcome guests who deal with innovative ideas in the paper industry. The committee thus keeps itself informed about the latest trends, even off the beaten track.

At the most recent meeting of the ZELLCHEMING TC MBIO, guests included Gerald Krätschmer and Dr. Thomas Eichinger from C Square, who spoke on the topic of flow cytometry for the determination of bacteria, yeasts and molds in the paper industry.

The company, which is supported by an Austrian technology fund, was founded two years ago and has developed a device suitable for online monitoring of microbiological and chemical parameters. A prototype is to be marketed in the second quarter following the first successful practical trials in a cardboard factory, it was said at the presentation, and there are also plans to control the dosing of biocides, the effectiveness of which will be fed back through the measuring device. It is expected that this will result in significant savings in the amount of biocides dosed. Deposit monitoring is also planned, as a scattered light signal allows the determination of bacterial groups based on morphological criteria as well as the differentiation of inorganic particles.

Up to a stock consistency of 4% can be measured without clogging, company representatives explained. The service life without maintenance was given as 3 years without maintenance and the robustness of the instrument, also against heat and humidity, was underlined.

The TC MBIO will meet for the next meeting at the ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2023 in Wiesbaden.

Technical Subcommittee Finishing and Converting Paper and Board intends to draw up guidelines for uniform packaging

Recently, the ZELLCHEMING Technical Subcommittee Finishing and Converting Paper and Board met at Weig-Karton in Mayen. One of the agenda items was whether it would make sense to draw up a guideline for uniform packaging. After several years of exchange and mutual visits, the committee agrees that there is a current standard for packaging format goods in our market environment.

At the same time, there are specific questions, uncertainties, and requirements on the customer side and wishes for sometimes significant deviations from this. The participants, therefore, agreed that a generally applicable packaging standard should be set out as a guideline. This guideline can and should consider the following aspects: Packaging system, type of pallet and its foiling, labeling, under/overhang of format goods, stacking accuracy, the definition of first and last sheet as packaging material and the examination of possibly existing standards.

Against this background, it is planned to prepare another impulse lecture by a well-known system supplier for packaging in the fall.
