UF Health mourns passing of Dr. Leon Haley

Leon L. Haley Jr., M.D., CEO of UF Health Jacksonville and dean of the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville, passed away unexpectedly July 24. Haley, 56, was a strong, inspirational leader and beloved son, father, friend and colleague.

The UF Health family continues to honor Haley’s legacy through efforts such as a virtual memorial service held last week, a special tribute page and the establishment of the Dr. Leon L. Haley Jr. Memorial Fund. Gifts to the fund will build upon Haley’s goal of promoting health equity, diversity and inclusion and help fulfill his vision of making UF Health Jacksonville the region’s most valuable health care asset.

COVID-19 vaccine champion spotlight

For third-year medical student Samari Blair, M.P.H., getting the COVID-19 vaccine meant impacting population health. “The same medicine that helped combat cholera and smallpox is the same medicine that makes vaccines possible,” she said.

UF research earns $861 million in fiscal year 2021
 
UF faculty earned $861 million in research funding in fiscal year 2021 – the second-highest amount ever – despite the ongoing challenges presented by the pandemic, with the College of Medicine in Gainesville alone drawing $319.8 million.

Answering a genetic mystery

Andrew Liu, Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of physiology and functional genomics who is credited with discovering which gene controls humans’ circadian rhythms, is part of a team studying Smith-Kingsmore Syndrome, or SKS, a rare genetic disorder. Now a gift from the SKS Foundation is helping to fuel Liu's work to improve quality of life for children with this disorder.

UF Health and Alachua County Fire Rescue join forces for pediatric trauma patients

In an effort to improve patient safety and quality of care for pediatric trauma patients, the UF Health Pediatric Trauma Program and Alachua County Fire Rescue recently hosted hosted community paramedics for an educational outreach opportunity.

The event was the first of its kind between ACFR and UF Health and included pediatrics simulations and skills stations.

Focus groups completed for strategic planning process

Thank you to all who participated in the various focus groups. Faculty from the basic science departments, pictured here, met Aug. 6 to share perspectives on the future of the college, and the final focus group met Aug. 11.

With this phase completed, the next step in the strategic planning process involves analyzing the feedback gathered from the survey, retreats and focus groups.
