Mass Attendance is Up, But Still Far Below Pre-Covid Numbers

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Sunday Mass attendance in Hawaii suffered a big hit from COVID-19 and, though recovering, has a long way to go to return to its pre-pandemic numbers, according to the 2022 October count, the annual tally of heads in church conducted by the diocesan chancellor’s office.

Last October saw 31,874 men, women and children in the pews of Hawaii’s 65 parish churches, two dozen “missions” and two ethnic communities.

That is a stunning 14,266 fewer than the 2019 pre-pandemic total of 46,140.

But the trend is upward. The lowest point was 2020 when the pandemic hit hardest and churches across the board lost 50-60% in attendance. Read more...

Volunteers Needed for Lanakila Meals on Wheels

From the Office for Social Ministry

During some of the most difficult moments of the Covid pandemic, volunteers from Diocesan parishes helped provide Meals on Wheels to kupuna who included some of the most vulnerable elders on Oahu. Since 1971 Lanakila Meals on Wheels have been a trusted provider of healthy and delicious complete meals with goal to ensure seniors and individuals with disabilities receive meals so they can continue to live at home. Now as their program grows, Lanakila Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers who are willing and able to volunteer some of their time, once a week Monday-Friday.

Home delivered meals and so much more. Whether for a short recovery period, caregiver respite or over the long-term for independent living, Lanakila Meals on Wheels home-delivered meal service is a convenient way to receive nutritious meals. Lanakila Meals on Wheels works with registered dieticians and chefs to ensure our healthy and delicious meals meet or exceed USDA nutrition guidelines and have the local flavors we all love! ‘Ohana Mass, May 27

Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners have established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “‘Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana. However this month, Mary, Star of the Sea will celebrate the ‘Ohana Mass this coming Saturday May 27, 2023.

Saint of the Week

Saint Christopher Magallanes
1869–1927
Memorial – May 21

“¡Viva Cristo Rey! ¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!” Long live Christ the King! Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe! This was the cry of the Christeros, mostly peasant Catholics who opposed the fierce political and anti-Catholic oppression inflicted by the Mexican government on its citizens in the early twentieth century.

The Catholic faith arrived in modern-day Mexico in the early 1500’s with Spanish Franciscians. In 1531, the apparition of Our Lady in Guadalupe greatly aided efforts to share the Gospel. Devotion to the Mother of God and conversions to the Catholic faith grew far and wide. By the turn of the nineteenth century, the Catholic Church was a powerful force in the Spanish colony of Mexico. As a result, some ruling parties resented the Church and sought to eradicate Her influence. Anti-Catholic sentiment especially grew once Mexico declared its independence from Spain in 1810.
