A packed season & plenty to celebrate!

There was plenty of energy at Royal Oak Bowls last Sunday, as over 210 guests came together for our Annual Awards Luncheon — and what a celebration it was! With the room buzzing, we took the time to celebrate the players, volunteers and clubs that made the 2024–2025 season one to remember.

Sports broadcaster and former Silver Fern Courtney Tairi kept things moving as MC, setting the tone for an afternoon full of laughter, recognition and pride in our bowls community.

Some standout moments? Liam Hill backed up last year’s Young Bowler win with the Men’s Bowler of the Year title. Lisa Prideaux made history with five Centre titles this season and a 10 Gold Star medallion to show for all her effort. And Allan Smith received a heartfelt round of applause for his 20+ years of service to bowls — an incredible commitment.

The celebration also highlighted the work happening behind the scenes at club level — with Bowls Maraetai recognised for a standout initiative, Auckland Bowling Club named Club of the Year, and Doreen Jensen of Ōtāhuhu Railway awarded Club Person of the Year.

It was a great reminder that bowls success comes in many forms, and every contribution counts! 👏

Clean sweep in Cambridge at Winter Quad

Auckland’s 1–5 Year Rep squads lit up the greens in Cambridge last weekend, delivering a powerful performance that saw both the men’s and women’s teams top their divisions at the annual Winter Quad.

With match wins across all formats and a massive combined shot differential, the results speak volumes about the depth of talent coming through Auckland’s development ranks. The women's team posted a dominant +79 margin, while the men backed it up with a +56 of their own—both outpacing their rivals in style.

Among the standout efforts were Peter McConnell’s trio of singles victories, the unbeaten Triples skipped by Phil Garratt, and a Fours combo that remained rock-solid all day. On the women’s side, wins from Penny Yam, Sacha Collins, and an unshuffled Fours line-up featuring Melanie Swami sealed the deal.

Beyond the scoreboard, the event was a proud moment for team culture and coaching cohesion. New faces stepped up, selectors took notes, and the road to next season’s rep fixtures just got a lot more competitive.  Next stop: winter coaching phase – eyes already on October trials!

Mid-Winter Cheer and Champions!

-- Cynthia Morris

Kohimarama Bowls has been full of energy and celebration lately – and we’ve loved every minute!

On Saturday 5 June, we got festive with our Mid-Winter Christmas and Prizegiving, combining a season-end celebration with a delicious Christmas-style feast (with all the trimmings, of course!). It was the perfect way to celebrate our club champions and share some cheer with our Kohi whānau.

Then, just a few days later, we wrapped up another season of fierce-yet-friendly competition with the final of our 10-week Open Winter Tuesday PAK’nSAVE 242 series. Every week brought great turnouts, awesome bowls, and a strong community vibe. Big congrats to the season’s top performers who shared in the $700 prize pool for 1st, 2nd, and 7th places!

A massive shout-out to the crew at PAK’nSAVE Glen Innes – your continued support of community bowls makes these events possible, and we love the mahi you do.

What’s next? We’re not slowing down! Mark your calendars: Tuesday Mixed Summer Triples kicks off on 2 September – bring your sunhats and your A-game!

Here's to a fun winter, a cracking season, and even more bowls to come!
