Dear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING,

We would like to start by referring to this year's general meeting held on the first day of the Expo:

The agenda of the meeting, which was chaired by Dr. Ernst-Ulrich Wittmann, the ZELLCHEMING Chairman, included reports on the past association year, the work of the main committee, as well as the development of finances and the audit of the treasury. Among the motions were the approval of the annual report as well as the resolution on the annual financial statements 2021, the discharge of the board and the management for the association year 2021 as well as an amendment to the articles of association. This was followed by the honors for 40, respectively 50 years of membership in the association and the announcement of the special honors for 2022.

Europe focuses on the circular economy of paper and cardboard

Organizations representing recyclers and paper and board producers in Europe have committed to recycle 76% of all paper consumed on the continent by 2030. Representatives of several European recycling and paper organizations met in Brussels at the end of June to announce this commitment at the European Paper Recycling Awards ceremony.

"With the recycling rates already achieved, paper and board are leaders in the industry," said Ulrich Leberle, secretary of the Brussels-based European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC). "Both the ongoing initiatives and the planned steps will allow us to close the loop of the economy even further."

The Brussels-based Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), which represents paper and board producers, says: "The new ambitious recycling rate of 76%, calculated by recycling recovered paper in relation to total paper and board consumption, should be achieved by 2030. It represents a top performance both at a global level and across the materials sector, as paper and board is the most recycled material in Europe."

The commitment is contained in a document called the "European Declaration on Paper Recycling 2021-2030," the organizations said. This document sets out measures to optimize the management of paper at each step of a continuous recycling loop," EPRC and CEPI said.

The organizations explain that this recycling loop "involves a wide range of operations, from the manufacture of paper and board, through conversion into products and printed matter, to collection, sorting and recycling. Each step in this process is a distinct industry sector with only a certain degree of horizontal integration, so collaboration is essential to achieve the ambitious recycling goal."

However, the industry associations that co-signed the declaration also point to what they call "several conditions that need to be met by the EU and local authorities." These include, according to the EPRC and CEPI, "limiting the use of waste paper for energy recovery and ensuring the separate collection of paper to preserve the quality of the material. The organizations call separate paper collection a "prerequisite" for higher recycling rates and say separate collection "must be further promoted." At the same time, the coalition says it is also "pushing boundaries" to identify additional paper and cardboard products that can be recycled.

The agenda also included two technical presentations: Dr. Thomas Lederer, FMIcon, spoke about "Process optimization through in-situ calibration of chemical dosing in the deinking process". Jürgen Käser, Voith, spoke on "Data-driven solutions in the process industry as an update on Industry 4.0".
