New figures have revealed that 27 per cent of people who finished the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme by December 2022 achieved remission. People with type 2 diabetes at risk of cardio-renal complications are less likely to develop diabetic kidney disease if they are started on preventative treatment early, a consultant nephrologist claims. Speaking at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2024, Dr Andrew Frankel, Consultant Nephrologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, has said that diabetic kidney disease can be preventable if those at risk of cardio-renal complications are identified early. Detecting what triggers diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) will help to prevent the development of the potentially life-threatening complication, a researcher specialising in diabetes and endocrinology has revealed. Dr Punith Kempegowda, Assistant Professor in Endocrinology, Diabetes and General Medicine at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham, highlighted that the number of DKA cases could fall if healthcare professionals can identify and treat what is causing the development of the complication.
