Be part of the action at the official RLWC2017 Fan Zone on the Cairns Esplanade from 4pm on Friday 27 October. Take in the tastes, sights and sounds of Italy, Scotland and Ireland before settling in to what the Aussies take on England on the big screen. For some international rugby league action in the flesh, grab your tickets to Sunday's double-header at Barlow Park. Tickets are still available to see Ireland take on Italy, and Scotland play Tonga from 2pm. Australia Day Awards openDo you know someone in our community who is worthy of recognition? Nominations are now open for the 2018 Cairns Region Australia Day Awards. The awards recognise outstanding achievement and contribution by residents of the Cairns region. There are seven award categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Cultural Award, Junior Cultural Award, Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year (open age). Nominations can be made online and must be received by 8 December 2017. Drop off green waste, pick up sandbagsSummer is fast approaching and that means it's time to prepare for the wet season. Domestic green waste can be dropped off free of charge from 4 to 12 November at Council's waste transfer stations. Free sandbags will also be made available for residents living in low-lying or floodprone areas, to help with wet season preparations. Sandbags will need to be filled at the location and scoops are provided for ease of filling. See full details and location information. Improvements to parkingCouncil will create an additional 350 car parking spaces near the Cairns Hospital and make changes to encourage better turnover of vehicles in the CBD. A combination of free and paid spaces will be added, with 3, 4 and 8 hour time limits. Throughout the city, regulated parking hours will be expanded 8.30am-6pm 7 days a week and casual parking fees with increase by 20 cents and hour. Fines will rise by 15 per cent. Free centre median parking will be retained and there will be no fee increase at the Hartley St and Bunda St all-day carparks. The Lake St parking station will re-open on 1 January to provide a further 300 spaces. See full details of changes. Spread some Christmas cheerThe Mayor's Christmas Cheer Appeal supports people in our community who are doing it tough at Christmas. Your donation will help to provide food hampers to families and senior members of our community who might otherwise go without. Donations big or small can be made securely via Council's website. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Arts grants availableApplications are open for the latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants program. Local arts and cultural projects may be eligible for up to $10,000 in grant funding. See the applications guidelines for more info. This year's theme is Santa Snorkels the Reef. Entries close Friday 10 November. Winners will be invited to switch on the Cairns Esplanade Christmas Tree lights and will receive prizes donated by local businesses. Council to meet at SmithfieldThe next Ordinary Meeting of Council will be held at the Marlin Coast Recreation Centre, located at 27 Leisure Park Road, Smithfield, on Wednesday 22 November.
