Merry Christmas

We hope you have a fantastic Christmas and a safe New Year from all the team at North Canterbury Veterinary Clinics.

Our clinics will be closed 25 & 26th December and 1st & 2nd January (there will be no late nights in Amberley on 24th or 31st). For any emergencies please call the clinic for contact details of the duty vet.

Time to Check Rams for Breeding Soundness

We will be doing our annual Ram Runs again this season. This involves checking sire rams for disease or injury which may affect reproductive performance. It involves palpating scrotal contents, along with checking pizzles, feet, eyes, teeth and body condition. We can also discuss mating management, reproductive vaccines, vasectomising rams and vaccinating dogs.

Keep an eye out for further information about when this will be happening in your area.

Parasite Alert

We have already seen some high faecal egg counts (FEC) in lambs this season. Given the warm weather, with the odd drop of gentle rain, we are likely to see this trend continuing. If in doubt, a FEC can be a quick tool to help with drenching decisions.

Please feel free to contact your local vet or sales team to discuss your parasite control programme.

Conveyor Bookings

Don't forget your orders for Toxo and Campy. These can be placed by ringing either your sales rep or clinic.  Remember, if you want the Conveyor team to help you with this application, book them in as soon as possible. This is a very busy time for the team so if you want your preferred time it's best to call Catherine Smith early.

Triple Drench Resistance

It's ram sale time, and worth remembering that newly purchased rams can be a risk for the introduction of drench resistant worms (also important to consider when purchasing other stock). North Island studies have shown that 18% of drench tests completed had triple drench resistance present, therefore you have a significant risk of buying in stock with triple drench resistance.

Quarantine protocol:
- When new stock arrives, treat them with a novel drench i.e. Zolvix or Startect. Do not use your normal drench.
- Hold stock in a paddock that is “wormy” for 36hrs to allow any resistant worms to pass through.

Also note that when receiving in store lambs, many have not received any vaccinations at all. Giving them a 5in1 + Se B12 will help to prevent those sudden losses and slow growth rates.

If anyone requires small quantities of either Zolvix or Startect, please get in touch and we can dispense this for you.
