Welcome to the new PgCAPHE students

During February we were pleased to welcome an increasing number of new staff to the PgCert in Academic Practice in HE (PgCAPHE) and to the Introduction to Teaching and Learning.

In total, 77 people joined the first module of the PgCAPHE and our learning community from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Scarborough, CU London and Coventry. Seeing a diverse mix of staff commencing their journey at CU has been fantastic and we all have enjoyed introducing them to teaching and learning - the Coventry Way.

A massive 87 people embarked on the second module focused on Assessment and Feedback (7001CRB). This learning experience connects to improving student satisfaction and the development of assessment practices that are authentic. The final module (M09ODL) takes learners further addressing the process of Course Design using a course-based approach to design a PGDip in Education.

We were excited to see the Introduction to Teaching and Learning (7010CRB) continuing to grow as a short course. Forty six new starters joined in February and through the Doctoral College we have welcomed a large cohort of postgraduate researchers.

Our accredited programmes in numbers:

  • PgCAPHE - 7000CRB: 77 students
  • PgCAPHE - 7001CRB: 87 students
  • PgCAPHE - M09ODL: 43 students
  • Intro to T&L - 7010CRB: 46 students

Applications are now open for the September cohorts of PgCAPHE and 7010CRB. Who should apply? Those who would like an accredited higher education teaching qualification leading to HEA Fellowship.

Nominations for the 2020 Excellence Awards are now open

These annual awards are a hugely important part of our university calendar, giving us the opportunity to recognise the exceptional talent that is at the core of everything we do and celebrate our fellow colleagues who make a vital contribution to our success.

There are 13 categories of award. Two of these are ‘nominated awards’ meaning you can nominate a team that you recognise to have been outstanding; while 11 are 'invited awards' and teams are invited to make a submission evidencing their own work. The awards are open to all members of staff, whatever your role or department, so please nominate your team or colleagues so we can share and celebrate our achievements.

Award categories range from excellence in student experience to outstanding professional services team – and numerous others in between. You can read more on the award categories, and find out how to make a nomination, on the dedicated awards pages. Please do take some time to view the categories and think about how you can get involved.

We have more than 30 workshops to improve your teaching skills

Since September 2019, over 1,050 people have attended various workshops in addition to those engaging with their professional development online using webinars and locally (e.g. bespoke provisions).

We always look forward to seeing new and existing staff attending the various events run across the group. If you have not yet had a chance to attend one of the workshops, or even if you are wondering what is available to you, take a look at what is on offer through our web page. Listed are sessions that you can choose from.

We are delighted that 99% of those attending would 'recommend a friend' and we look forward to continuing to support you over the coming months.

"A very comprehensive and very well run course which will impact on my teaching next week." [Participant]

New and improved CQEM training for students

CQEM training for students receives positive feedback

The engaging new programme includes face-to-face and interactive training with practical exercises that consider all learning styles of our diverse student body.

Our students are key stakeholders at Coventry University, and can offer fresh insight on behalf of the diversity of their peers – including those with different learning needs, international, part-time, and who took alternative routes to university.

Students from across the university are invited to join the programme, that aims to teach them the importance of delivering peer feedback in course reviews. Engaging students to take part as course collaborators is beneficial to staff as well as current and future students.

Since sessions started in December over 80 students across Coventry University and CUC have been trained. According to feedback, all attendees increased their understanding and confidence in the CQEM process and their role as delegates, with 100% satisfaction and would recommend training to their peers.

In 2018/19 only 38% of CQEM meetings reported having students present to deliver a statement on behalf of their peers. We hope to see an improvement in student engagement in this year's CQEM Reports, as a result of this new programme of training.

To increase student engagement in course creation, and the wider university community, get in touch with Kate Torrens (Student Engagement).

Una Murphy - Lecturer in Journalism

"Getting this professional recognition gave me more expertise in pedagogy"

I am Una Murphy, a Lecturer in Journalism at Coventry University. I work part-time at the university and also run VIEWdigital, a community media publisher, specialising in social affairs journalism. I have also worked as journalist in TV and radio for major broadcasters in Britain and Ireland as well as a newspaper reporter.

When did you get your AFHEA recognition? I had a lot of industry experience in media but not a lot of teaching experience, so I decided to apply for the AFHEA in late 2019.

Why is this important for you? It was important to me to get this professional recognition as it gave me more expertise in Pedagogy. I have had great support from Susan Bray [lead for the HEA accreditation].
