Click here Cairns Regional Council e-news - Volume 29, 28 September 2017Free shuttle bus for Elton fansConcertgoers are encouraged to check their entry gate number and use public transport to get to Sir Elton John's Cairns concert this Saturday. Council will provide a free shuttle bus service to and from Cazalys Stadium to reduce traffic around the venue. Buses will depart the Lake St bus station and the Cairns Showgrounds from 4.20pm and return to the same locations following the concert. There are two drop-off points at Cazalys, servicing Gate 1 or Gate 2. Ticketholders should check their gate number prior to planning their travel. Free parking will be available at the Showgrounds via the Severin St access, with the bus pick-up point located on Scott St. Other Sunbus services will operate as per normal schedule and fares. Taxi ranks will operate from Mann St and Mulgrave Rd. More info on travel arrangements. Road closures for concertRoad closures, parking restrictions and changed traffic conditions will apply around Cazalys this Saturday 30 September from 1pm. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays. See our website for full details and map. Red Arrow improvementsThe western side of the Red Arrow walking track will be closed from this Sunday (1 Oct) for up to four weeks for improvement works under the Works for Qld program. The eastern side of the loop will remain open and access to the Blue Arrow will be maintained. Register now for Baby WelcomeNew parents throughout the Cairns region are invited to register their bundles of joy for the city’s annual Baby Welcome Ceremony. Babies born in the past 12 months will be formally welcomed into the Cairns community by Mayoress Claire Manning on Saturday 28 October. The ceremony has become a milestone event for parents of new babies and is commemorated with a special keepsake certificate. Babies born between 1 October 2016 and 30 September 2017 can be registered online.

Pedal in for a free brekkyNational Ride2Work Day is the ideal opportunity to dust off that old bicycle and try a different kind of commute. Ride2Work Day is the largest celebration of commuter riding in Australia, with around 50,000 registrations each year. Cairns Regional Council will host a free breakfast on the Cairns Esplanade for cyclists who choose the two-wheeled commute on the day. Pedal in from 6.30am for a free feed, plus a sports massage, bicycle service and giveways. Register online to be part of the commuter revolution! Learn more about National Ride2Work Day. Bat Chats at librarySchool holiday Bat Chats continue this weekend at the Cairns Library. Meet at the corner of Aplin & Lake St at 5.30pm on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to learn about flying foxes and their habitat. World class league in CairnsThe Rugby League World Cup comes to Cairns next month. There are still tickets available to see the world's best go head-to-head at Barlow Park. A double-header on Sunday 29 October will feature Ireland vs Italy and Scotland vs Tonga. On Saturday 11 November, Scotland will return to Cairns to take on Samoa. Come along and be part of the Rugby League World Cup action! Be part of Games festivalTalented locals are invited to be part of a celebration like no other when Cairns steps up as an Event City for next year’s Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Festival 2018 is a 12-day cultural program that will coincide with the Games, featuring local and visiting talent. The program will include a Cairns Esplanade LiveSite, where live sporting action beamed to big screens will be intertwined with cultural performances and activities. Local artists and performers are invited to apply to be part of the LiveSite. To find out more, come along to the free information session at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre on 10 October. News from the librariesNew services at BabindaFrom next week, Babinda residents will have improved access to Council services at Babinda Library. From October 3, residents can visit the library to pay Council rates, water bills and other fees and charges via secure EFTPOS and cheque payments. Cash is not accepted. New customer service hours are Monday - Friday 9am-12.30pm & 1.30pm-3pm. Taipans to visit EarlvillePlayers from the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans will be at Earlville Library next week as part of the First 5 Forever program.
