Hey Traveller,
|
Last month, Japan finally dropped the last of its remaining COVID-related entry requirements. Though it opened its borders 6 months prior, there were many conditions in the beginning - at first only tourists travelling on a guided tour could enter, then only tourists on a set itinerary arranged by an approved travel agency, then slowly easing restrictions more and more over time.
During this time, despite remaining constraints, Japan experienced huge demand from travellers, and it’s easy to see why - Japan is simply a fantastic destination! I don’t tend to revisit destinations, because there are so many new places I have yet to explore, but I love Japan and have already been there three times (and will likely go again).
The first time was as a young man, hitchhiking around Honshu (the main island) for a couple of months, and the other two times were much more recently and in a more organised fashion. Each visit leaving a lasting impression on me, with experiences that I frequently reminisce about and share with others.
Like with most countries, although the main cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, etc.) are wonderful and showcase an enchanting blend of age-old traditions and ultramodern marvels, the true beauty and appeal of the country is in the more rural areas. Moreover, Japan is a country of stark contrasts, and its four distinct seasons further enhance the varied charms of its many regions.

Spring (March to May) is undeniably the best (certainly my favourite) time to visit Japan, when the iconic cherry blossoms (sakura) paint the country in hues of pink and white. The season is celebrated with hanami parties – flower viewing picnics under the blooming trees. Kyoto and Tokyo, with their cherry blossom-lined paths and parks, turn into magical landscapes. Spring in Hokkaido (in the north) is somewhat delayed, with Sakura blooming in May, providing a wonderful opportunity to extend your cherry blossom viewing.
Summer (June to August), while hot and humid in most of Japan, is perfect for exploring Hokkaido. The lavender fields of Furano are at their peak, blanketing the landscape in a sea of purple. Meanwhile, Kyoto and Tokyo become epicentres for traditional festivals such as Gion Matsuri and Sumida River Fireworks Festival respectively. It's also the ideal time to climb Mount Fuji, which is only open to climbers in July and August – though this is not for the faint of heart, and a certain level or fitness is required.
Autumn (September to November) brings a palette of red, gold, and yellow as the koyo (autumn leaves) transform the scenery. Kyoto’s ancient temples and gardens become even more breathtaking against the backdrop of fiery fall foliage. The Kiso Valley, with its well-preserved post towns along the old Nakasendo route, offers exceptional autumn views. Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan National Park also offers beautiful autumn colours, albeit earlier, usually peaking in late September.
Winter (December to February) sees the country blanketed in snow. This is the season to visit the Japanese Alps for world-class skiing and onsen (hot spring) experiences, particularly in areas like Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen (where the famous Dosojin Matsuri – fire festival – is held). The Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) in Sapporo, Hokkaido, showcases spectacular ice sculptures and snow structures. The southern parts like Okinawa remain relatively warm, perfect for those seeking winter sun.
The charms of Japan don’t end with its gorgeous seasons and spectacular landscapes though, you will also be captivated by a confluence of rich history that unfurls like an ancient scroll, a culture that is both reverential and dynamic, and mesmerizing locales that leave you spellbound.
