Keine Bilder? Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterDecember 2020 From the officeDear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, At the beginning of the year, who could have imagined that a "hello" could be affirmed by extending the tip of your foot instead of a handshake? The circumstances challenge us to rethink. Corona, for example, has led to many constants in our lives being questioned - and at the same time, dealing with the virus shows us new ways to deal with it. Virtual District Group MeetingZELLCHEMING is also adapting to the changed framework conditions and developing new formats: For example, our 1st Virtual ZELLCHEMING/VPM District Group Event took place on 26.11.2020. It was a complete success - 115 participants attended the joint online event with the Vereinigte Papierfachverband München e.V. Under the main topic "Single-Use-Plastics-Directive (SUPD) - Disposable Plastics Directive in the EU", the presentation by Dr. Christoph Persin (Head of Energy & Environment, Association of German Paper Mills, VDP) made it clear what effects and associated requirements will be faced by the paper industry. The discussion was spurred on by the contribution of Dr. Sebastian Porkert, who spoke about the emergence of microplastics and their possible origins in the manufacturing processes of the paper industry. Congratulations! We congratulate our ZELLCHEMING advisory board member Jukka Valkama, head of the paper technology course at the Duale Hochschule Karlsruhe, on the NEO2020 Innovation Award. With the NEO2020, the Technology Region Karlsruhe wants to highlight concrete examples of the bio-economy and award the most convincing idea. Jukka Valkama succeeded in doing this: he developed substitute material made of paper for plastic packaging and products. The invention can replace disposable products such as cutlery, plates or drinking straws, which will be banned throughout the European Union from next year. Valkama's development also fits in very well with our objective at ZELLCHEMING: the establishment and promotion of the bio-economy network. From Society & IndustryEuropean paper industry presents ways for decarbonisation until 2030At the annual conference "Paper & Beyond" of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) in Brussels on 17-18 November, the European paper industry presented its main paths to decarbonisation by 2030. "Our Industry Manifesto for 2030 sets out the ways in which we can realise the potential for carbon reduction. With substantial and targeted support from the EU as part of its Green Deal package of legislation, these factors can play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and possibly exceed the already ambitious targets," said CEPI Chairman Ignazio Capuano. The Manifesto identifies three main catalysts for the paper industry's decarbonisation efforts: product substitution, sustainable forest management and emission reduction in production processes. "Our industry can provide climate-friendly substitutes for fossil, carbon-intensive products currently on the market and generate a multiplier effect through our expertise in recycling management," says CEPI. The association added that the EU should help to create new markets for renewable bio-based products and ensure a steady supply of recyclable raw materials, such as high quality virgin fibre. Furthermore, recycling could be further promoted by improving and harmonising European waste collection systems, CEPI said. Regarding reducing emissions from production processes, CEPI noted that the paper industry has already achieved significant results in its decarbonisation efforts. "The remaining emissions are almost entirely due to energy consumption. While rising energy costs would simply make European industry less competitive, we believe that more can be achieved through a renewed European industrial strategy aimed at promoting carbon-neutral production in Europe," the association said. Legislation on food contact materials (FCM) to be revisedThe European Council endorsed the European Commission's (EC) "Farm to Fork" strategy and welcomed its plan to revise the legislation on food contact materials (FCM) "to improve food safety and public health". In a statement, the Council said that it "encourages the Commission to further develop harmonised rules for certain types of food contact materials in view of the increasing requirements, while ensuring food safety". The Council also said that it wants "a declaration of compliance" for all FCMs as a new EU-wide requirement "to document the safety of materials, to communicate relevant information in the supply chain and to improve the recyclability of food contact materials". In May the European Commission published the "Farm to Fork" strategy, with Q4 2022 as the new target date for a proposal to revise EU legislation on FCMs. From the membershipWepa: Top rating in study "Germany's most sought-after employers"In addition to employer performance, other reputation factors such as profitability, product and service performance, sustainability and management leadership have been shown to play a significant role in the attractiveness of a company from the employee's point of view. In the paper industry and converting segment, Wepa leads hygiene products with the highest score of 100 points, followed by Progroup, Sappi Alfeld, UPM, Schreiner Group and Felix Schoeller Holding. The study was not based on surveys within a limited circle, but on a so-called social listing of countless sources on the Internet, which analysed and evaluated what is posted online about a company, what discussions are held and what "sentiment", i.e. feeling, accompanies them. The 26 million mentions of around 22,000 companies found between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020 were stored, split, and analysed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI examined the found sites in six categories, which were intended to show in detail why the authors of the online postings considered the companies to be more or less "desirable". Among the categories is, for example, "employer performance", which included aspects such as job security and working atmosphere. Another example is "economic performance", which looks, among other things, at profitability and the development of employee numbers. A new category compared with the previous year is "performance through family friendliness", which shows the extent to which the company enables its employees to combine family and career. Based on this test, a score was calculated, which for each category is made up of two parts: the tonal balance and the range. Both values were added up to one score and then the six categories were added together to give a total score for each company. "The worst" company scored zero and "the best" company scored 100 points at the end of the scale. A warm welcome! We welcome the company Halle Karton GmbH as a new company member. Dipl.-Ing. After the meeting on 24 November 2020 of the Board of Trustees of the Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS), its chairman Dr. Stefan Karrer announced that after almost 5 years, sole director Clemens Zotlöterer will leave the foundation in April of the coming year 2021 at his own request. "With the foundation created in recent years, the Papiertechnische Stiftung is well equipped for the future," said Dr. Karrer, praising the successful and trusting cooperation. Clemens Zotlöterer will move to the real estate sector as part of a company succession. In 2016 Clemens Zotlöterer joined the Papiertechnische Stiftung which was in financial difficulties. Subsequently the Munich location was closed, and research activities were concentrated in Heidenau/Dresden. Over the last few years, the focus of research has been sharpened and the administration modernised and adapted to the circumstances. With a million euro grant from the State of Saxony approved in the current year, the site will be further modernised and the building brought up to the latest standards. Despite Corona and an overall difficult development for the paper industry, the Papiertechnische Stiftung will be able to look back on a successful year in 2020.
