Less than half of people living with type 2 diabetes meet the recommended guideline targets for blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, new international research has shown. A global study involving academics from the University of Leicester has found that only 12 per cent of individuals with the condition are achieving all three targets simultaneously, despite significant advances in therapies and updated clinical guidelines. New research has bolstered the link between GLP-1RAs and type 2 diabetes remission, further demonstrating that remission can be a realistic goal. Previously, there has been limited evidence on this link despite the possibility of type 2 diabetes remission with GLP-1RAs attracting attention. The family of a two-year-old girl who died from undiagnosed type 1 diabetes earlier this year have paid tribute to their “joyful” daughter. On May 3, 2025, Lyla Story tragically died in her sleep just 16 hours after being wrongly diagnosed with tonsillitis by a GP, even though she was presenting symptoms linked to type 1 diabetes, such as a higher number of wet nappies, extreme tiredness and increased thirst. Academics from the University of Leicester have found that the risk of developing cancer following a prediabetes diagnosis is greater in those aged between 55 and 75 years than any other age group. In addition, new research has revealed that the risk of type 2 diabetes is lower in those aged 75 years or older.
