ANZAC Day is a day on which people commemorate the contributions of the Australian and New Zealand armed forces. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Held every year on 25 April, this date is deliberately chosen to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli Peninsula landings. Commemorations began in New Zealand in 1916, only a year after the landings. Then it was only a half-day holiday. It became a full day in 1921. Australia was a little later to mark the occasion, but by 1927, every Australian state held some kind of memorial ceremony on 25 April.

Glen Eden Bowls
1922 - 2022
Four years following the conclusion of the First World War, Glen Eden Bowling Club was established in 1922, on land gifted by the late Geo Hoskings, a local schoolmaster, for the princely sum of ten shillings ($1.00), a generous gift when one considers the value of this property today. Research has uncovered the original documents listing the names of the original Trustees; Messers Croucher, Finch, Kirkpatrick, Porteous, and Waldron. Ironically the stamp duty on this transaction was thirty shillings ($1-10) triple the purchase price. Read more about the history of Glen Eden Bowling Club
Glen Eden Bowls
16-17 April 2022
Countless bowls have been played since Glen Eden Bowling Club was first established in 1922! As part of a year-long programme of centenary events to mark our milestone, GEBC ran a two-day Fours tournament over Easter, on 16 and 17 April. Although the events have been a long time in planning, members were busy working in and around the clubhouse right up to the starting bell to ensure the club was looking its finest. If you stood still for too long, it was liable that you would be painted red! It was a big sigh of happiness for all as the country moved to Orange on 13 April - the ease in restrictions welcoming 132 players from across Auckland and beyond
to compete for the $10,000 prize pool. Play got off to a great start under beautifully clear skies on Saturday morning, with serious-minded bowling skills on display right from the first roll. Sunday saw a stiff breeze arrive on the greens to keep the players honest during the second day with three games and an outdoor lunch. Once play had ended, match officials disappeared behind closed doors to tally up all the points. Players, supporters and guests sampled Glen Eden's hospitality with a lunch created by our chef from our upstairs bistro kitchen. And after a full day on the greens, the club hosted a karaoke evening for the
musically minded. A Cook Island cultural group - who had the volume turned up to the max with music and dancers - kept everyone entertained and awake as they waited for the results. After the excitement, the results were announced, with Kerry Kirwan presenting the prizes on behalf of sponsor Barfoot & Thompson Glen Eden. Winners for the weekend were Mae Taurua, Jamie Hill, Kolani Maota, & Peni Panapa, a team of players from multiple clubs who were the only team to win all seven of their games, collecting 96 points. Many thanks to our major sponsor, Barfoot & Thompson Glen Eden, the army of Glen Eden members and helpers who volunteered their time
and efforts to get the club ready and be part of making our Centennial Tournament a success.

Onehunga & Districts
19 April 2022
Onehunga & Districts Easter Triples tournament has been going for about seven years. It started off as a two-day event but more recently has evolved into the popular one-day event it is today. Easter Friday weather was nothing but stunning - we had blue skies, no wind & the greens were running hot. In true Onehunga & Districts hospitality, the club created a festive vibe & made sure players and visitors were kept nourished throughout the day with an array of appetising food - probably not so good for the waistline but, everyone certainly left with a full stomach! We look forward to seeing all the players next year. Many thanks to our sponsor Ray Steel. In his speech, he said, "this one was the best event I've played in and I will continue our sponsorship next year." Below is a photo montage of the presentations. The winning team was Peni Panapa, Ray Seaman & Mamae Taurua.

St Heliers Bowls
19 April 2022
On Tuesday. we did play our final Open Triples Tournament of the 2021/22 season. Albeit under cloudy skies, all the bowlers enjoyed a good day. It did not rain or thunder like the weather forecasters said it would. Don’t take any notice of the TV weather forecasters or you will never play bowls! 54 bowlers played on nine rinks on A green as B green did have a few puddles and was deemed unsafe. So we balloted out two teams, thank you to those team members for their understanding. This made it possible for the remaining teams to play on the artificial green. Jayne Bryden from Meadowbank Village Oceania Healthcare was delighted to be in attendance for prize giving after two years of Covid restrictions. Jayne told the members that a new Oceania village is now under construction in Waimarie Street.
Winners with 4 wins 20 ends, 37 points: Bill Whitburn, Kaye Wilson & Ted Walker with Jayne Bryden from Meadowbank Village

Blockhouse Bay Bowls
20 April 2022
The early morning weather did not look promising but it didn't deter all 24 teams entered into Wednesday's ACT from arriving at the club by 9:30am. The top three winning teams all had won 3 out of 3 games, separated by just one end each of 18, 17 & 16 ends respectively. Congratulations to David Tonkin, John Edwards & Geoff Edwards for taking the top spot.

Blockhouse Bay Bowls
18 April 2022
Despite the unfavorable weather forecast early Monday morning, 60 bowlers (30 pairs) turned up at Blockhouse Bay to support our Easter Bowls of Hong Kong 2-4-2 Pairs. We started a bit earlier before time and managed to finish the first round under intermittent light showers. We went back out onto the greens after a short tea break. Unfortunately, the rain became heavier. Four to five ends later we had to abandon the second round. The conditions did not improve so we had to call it a day. The entry fees were refunded and everyone went home a bit
disappointed, some after a few rounds of drink.
Remuera Bowls
21 April 2022
