Jesuit Father Phillip Ganir bowed at the start of Mass July 14 at St. Elizabeth Church in Aiea as Father Arrion Rosales-Llantos, parochial vicar of St. Elizabeth, looked on. Father Ganir celebrated Mass to mark his 25th jubilee of profession as a Jesuit. (Celia K. Downes / Hawaii Catholic Herald)

The young boy running across the grounds of St. Elizabeth Church and School in Aiea in the 1980s probably wasn’t thinking about joining the priesthood.
Fast forward through grade school at St. Elizabeth, high school years at Damien Memorial School and college life at the University of Hawaii at Manoa: Jesuit Father Phillip Ganir increasingly found himself drawn to religious life and the priesthood, the “joy and happiness” he observed among ordained men.
After years of involvement in church and school ministries, plus a year abroad at the University of the Philippines, Father Ganir made the decision to join the Society of Jesus “because of the way I came to see how Jesuits worked to integrate their love for Jesus and the church with intellectual rigor and sensitivity to the poor.” He entered the order’s novitiate in 1999 — the same year he graduated from UH-Manoa. The 2024 Knights of Columbus - Coats for Kids drive is happening this fall. This program aims to provide coats for every needy child in North America so no child goes without a coat during winter. Here in Hawaii, even though we do not experience a mainland winter, we do have a rainy season which last from November thru March.
If you know of a child in need of a free - brand new rain resistant jacket for this upcoming school year, please notify the KOC.
Please send your request o help our keiki in need to coats@kofchawaii.org. Be sure to include: number of jackets needed, size, and if it's for a girl or boy. Your KOC members across the state of Hawaii will be fund raising for these jackets, and they will be free to for our keiki in need. Please help them if you can with your generous donations.

“To hope and act with creation means above all to join forces and to walk together with all men and women of goodwill.” Pope Francis’s message Hope and Act with Creation for the 2024 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
The intense summer heat and extreme weather we are currently facing around the world are clear indicators of the pressing climate change crisis, a critical issue that Pope Francis has repeatedly addressed in his previous papal messages including the 2015 encyclical Laudato Si' (Care for Our Common Home). In his groundbreaking message nearly a decade ago, our Holy Father recognized the connection between care for the environment and care for humanity, especially the poor. Now his recent 2024 message on Hope and Act with Creation emphasizes an urgent need to respond to global warming impacts with unity, love, and a commitment to sustainable practices that honor both our faith and our environment.“As people who dare to dream, we must dream with our eyes wide open, impelled by a desire for love, fraternity, friendship and justice for all.” Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

Saint James, Apostle First Century – c. 44
Feast – July 25

Among the Twelve Apostles were two named James: James, the son of Zebedee and James, the son of Alpheus. The former is traditionally called James the Greater, and the latter is traditionally called James the Lesser, perhaps because the former was taller than the latter, or more likely because of the greater importance James the Greater played in the Gospel narrative.
James the Greater, whom we honor today, was the brother of John, the Gospel writer. Their mother is traditionally believed to be Salome, who is identified as the sister to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Hence, if Salome and Mary were siblings, then James and John were Jesus’ cousins. Read more...
