Hawaii Catholic Herald
Falling on the feast day of St. Marianne Cope, the annual March for Life rally at the state Capitol Jan. 23 drew more than 250 people, including students and parishioners, from across the diocese.
While some attendees held signs and waved at motorists driving through downtown Honolulu, others sat in folding chairs and listened as featured guests spoke in the Capitol rotunda. Curious lawmakers and staff members gazed down from the offices above the open-air space.
Guest speaker Father Shenan Boquet, president of Human Life International and a priest in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana, discussed the importance of a culture of life encompassing all aspects of society, and he cited Pope Leo XIII’s quote on the foundation of human rights. Read more...

Hawaiʻi Island Homeless Point in Time Count Begins
|
 |

(Video screenshot courtesy of HOPE Services Hawai‘i)
From Hope Services Hawai‘i
Hawai‘i Island – Volunteers and outreach staff fanned out across Hawai‘i Island early Monday morning for the first shift of the Homeless Point in Time Count (HPIT), a federally mandated survey that offers a one-night snapshot of homelessness nationwide. Teams are not only canvassing public beaches, parks, and sidewalks, but also canals, cemeteries, caves, and remote areas only accessible by trail. The goal of the count is to identify and survey individuals and families residing in places not meant for human habitation.
The effort is led locally by HOPE Services Hawai‘i, in partnership with community organizations, service providers, and volunteers. Morning shifts start as early as 4:30 a.m., and evening shifts run as late as 8:30 p.m. throughout the week to ensure teams can reach communities across East and West Hawai‘i. More than 50 volunteers and staff are participating in the initiative. The early and late shift times were chosen because many of the people the teams aim to connect with have jobs, or stay in places where they cannot remain during the day, often moving before sunrise. Not All Heroes Wear Capes

From Catholic Charities Hawaii
At last month’s Heroes and Helpers event—co-hosted by Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, the Kaneohe Target at Windward Mall, and our incredible local first responders—two heartwarming moments truly stood out.
Heroes and Helpers brings holiday joy to keiki across O‘ahu by pairing each child with a first responder and giving them a gift card to shop for Christmas gifts for themselves and their families.
Officer Ilse Pratt & Kayla
Officer Pratt was paired with Kayla, an 11-year-old who immediately connected with her. Instead of toys, Kayla carefully chose essentials—pajamas, a blanket, clothing, and a volleyball to practice with. She shared how her recent move to Waimānalo has brought her happiness and stability, and how she planned to pass her gently used clothing to her younger sister. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry
“And what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
One scripture passage that has powerfully shaped social ministry is the Old Testament prophet Micah’s message about what God requires of everyone: “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” Micah 6:8 offers a fundamental framework for very heart of social ministry. This was compellingly expressed by Connie Mitchell, the Executive Director of the Institute of Human Services-IHS on Oahu, during her address at this year’s Diocesan Red Mass in St. Theresa’s Co-Cathedral on January 14. She is a Hawaiian born Anglican Christian who has been serving with persons suffering homelessness on Oahu for 40 years. Her lived experience provides an insight into social ministry community collaborations grounded in the Gospel. Read

Saint of the Week
Saint Ansgar
801–865
Memorial - February 3
Saint Rimbert succeeded today’s saint, Saint Ansgar, as the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, Germany. Saint Rimbert was about thirty years younger than Saint Ansgar and most likely met Ansgar when Rimbert was a young monk. Eventually, Rimbert became a constant companion of Ansgar, knowing many intimate details of his life. After Ansgar’s death, Rimbert wrote a detailed biography about him, blessing us with that same intimate knowledge about today’s saint. Read more...
