New Blog Post: Reminiscing Childhood in Heritage Hindi Class

Guest post by Mansi Bajaj, Ph.D., Lector of Hindi at Yale University and winner of the 2024 MAFLT LCTL Innovation Awards.

It is established that the pedagogy of heritage language teaching should be rooted in community building and appreciation for cultural and linguistic variety. Shared experiences and community building are known to increase student engagement and give opportunity for active learning. In Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL), students explore an issue for an extended period and create a product which is connected to their own concerns, interests, and identity.

Announcing the 2025 MAFLT LCTL Innovation Awards

These awards, offered by the NLRC and generously funded by the Michigan State University Online Graduate Programs in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT and Certificate), recognize outstanding, innovative, and transformative uses of technology in the teaching of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). For the purposes of this award, we consider LCTLs anything other than English and the commonly taught world languages of French, German, and Spanish. Three prizes ranging between $250 and $500 will be awarded this year. Last year’s award winners are featured on our blog.

The ViVID project has now welcomed its third cohort with fellows coming from 11 institutions and representing 5 target languages including Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, and Serbian. The teachers work in a variety of teaching contexts, such as 9-12 grade secondary schools and 4-year college or universities, and their teaching experience varies from 2 to 20+ years in the classroom, which enriches the peer mentoring groups and provides the perfect opportunity for professional growth. More information about the fellows will be coming in future newsletters!

Our newest Teach-a-LCTL guide was just released, aimed at the intermediate level!

The Teach-a-LCTL Resource Guides combine scholarship on community language education, research on heritage language learners, and literacies-based approaches to language learning. The guides aim to provide teachers and coordinators in community LCTL education programs with an easy-to-use resource, adaptable to their languages, cultures, and learners. Each guide has an introduction that describes the project’s rationale, as well as some of the things that make community LCTL programs unique. Both guides contain sample lesson plans on 5 themes: music; sports and movement; clothing; expressions and emotions; and food.

Does your institution want to expand their world language options for your students? We are actively seeking institutional partners to pilot our asymmetrical course sharing project. Partner with MSU to offer Persian, Russian, Tamil, or Vietnamese! (Other language options can be explored if there is interest!)

We are piloting this collaborative partnership structure, which would allow your institution the following benefits:

  • Students retain access to their own financial aid
  • Students earn home institution credits
  • Students pay their normal tuition rate
  • Keep a portion of the student’s tuition money for administrative costs

Please reach out to us if you are interested in exploring a partnership with us!

NLRC Social Media Highlight

BOO—Hope everyone had a spooktacular October! This month we began the month by introducing one of our hard-working program assistants, Sophie! On October 5th, we observed World Teacher’s Day, where we celebrate and support teachers of all subjects, all languages, all around the world! Tightly following that we celebrated Indigenous People’s Day—every day we continue to support and acknowledge the influence of culture and legacies from Indigenous communities and diasporas. Throughout the month, we continued to also advertise our free CEM course, that of which the deadline ended on 10/21. Follow our social media to see more of what we are up to!
