Business Update - June 2026
That's a wrap on Start Up, Invest and Grow in Monash Over the past month, we’ve connected people, businesses and industry across nine events and workshops, with more than 450 participating businesses - demonstrating significant demand for locally focused business support. Thank you to everyone who took part. We hope you continue to build on those valuable connections you’ve made this month. Cross contamination workshop for food businesses Join the Public Health team for free workshops designed to support food businesses and gain a better understanding around food safety requirements. In June we’ll discuss cross contamination and the importance of having strong food safety processes and practices, to protect your customers from serious health consequences. ATO Masterclass: Training for small business success The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is hosting a series of masterclasses to help you understand the essentials to starting a business, and share tips to help you succeed. During these free online sessions, you will have the opportunity to speak with an experienced tax officer, ask questions and gain insights tailored to your business needs. lodge correctly Monash Business Association Pitch Exchange: A business networking night Join the Monash Business Association Pitch Exchange and connect with local business owners. Featuring live pitches, genuine conversations, and a supportive business community, this is where increased visibility can turn into real momentum. When: Wednesday 24 June, 6pm - 9pm 2026 Monash Business Awards nominations A Nominee Networking Breakfast will be held before the Gala to connect and celebrate participants.
Reduce waste, cut costs and get expert help – for free Are you a Monash-based business looking to reduce your waste and lower costs? Our free pilot Trim Your Bin program is for you. Selected businesses will receive a waste assessment, a tailored action plan and expert guidance – plus a follow‑up assessment and report. 20% off car registrations for Victorian drivers From 1 June, Victorian drivers can apply for a one-off 20% rebate on registration payments. The rebate will be offered on registration payments for the 2025-26 financial year, for light vehicles used for personal use. This may also benefit sole traders who use personal vehicles for their business, helping reduce everyday operating expenses. Refugee Week 2026 event: Freedom Stories Join us for a community screening of Freedom Stories (2015), a documentary sharing the lived experiences of people seeking asylum in Australia. Free business mentoring for Monash businesses Running a retail business can be tough. Monash businesses can access free tailored business advice through Monash Council's partnership with Small Business Mentoring Service, offering eligible local business owners with up to 4 FREE one-hour sessions with an experienced business mentor. Get ready for Payday Super From Wednesday 1 July 2026, all small businesses will be required to pay superannuation on payday, not quarterly. Find out about the three key changes your businesses will need to understand under Payday Super, and how to prepare to avoid penalties.
Setting minimum resale prices: what's allowed Setting minimum resale prices is illegal under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, as it can harm fair competition between businesses. If you suspect a supplier is trying to control your resale prices, learn your rights and report the issue using the ACCC’s tool. Eastern Innovation offers coworking spaces, offices, event and meeting spaces for hire and a community of entrepreneurs in Melbourne’s east. From networking events to innovation programs, it’s a hub designed to help businesses succeed. Sustainable Business News Free Energy Advisory Service now open Registrations are now open for Energy Saver's free Energy Advisory Service. Eligible businesses can receive a Desktop Energy Analysis (valued at $1,500), giving you a clear picture of how your business uses energy and where you can reduce costs. You’ll also get a short, practical report with simple recommendations you can act on straight away. Places are limited. This pilot is available to just five Monash businesses. Business Energy Savers Program Businesses in the City of Monash can register with Energy Savers for free advice on improving energy efficiency and accessing the Victorian Government’s Energy Upgrade initiative. Energy Savers connects owners with accredited suppliers who handle upgrades and subsidy paperwork. For more information call 1300 571 535 or register below. Business Renewables Buying Group The Business Renewables Buying Group aims to help businesses move to 100% renewable electricity by using collective buying power to lower costs. An external facilitator will support the group to maximise purchasing power while reducing the complexity, time and cost of switching. This group is open to Victorian businesses that use over 500MWh of electricity annually, spend around $100,000 a year on electricity, and have energy contracts ending in 2025 or 2026. Changes to doing business from July 2026 From Wednesday 1 July 2026, there will be changes to how some businesses operate. This includes changes to superannuation, parental leave, instant asset write-off, seafood labelling and SMS marketing. Start preparing now to make the change easier for your business.

Innovation Victoria: A new chapter for Victoria's startup ecosystem Innovation Victoria, which will officially start operating early in the second half of the year, brings together all existing activities currently delivered by Breakthrough Victoria and LaunchVic into a single, integrated organisation. Monash Innovations Pathways: Industry roundtable Join an exclusive evening at the Monash Generator to explore Monash Innovation Pathways - a new initiative connecting local businesses with high-performing Monash students for short-term innovation projects. This intimate roundtable brings together founders, business leaders and innovators to preview the pilot program, discuss workforce challenges, and shape new industry and university collaboration models. Places are limited, please register your interest to participate. When: Wednesday 1 July, 5.30pm - 7.30pm Jumpstart your Career online program for migrants, refugees and international students Build your confidence and job-ready skills with this free online workshop series for migrants, refugees and international students. Delivered by MiCare and the Migrant Workers Centre, these practical sessions will help you improve your job applications and succeed in interviews. The online program is open to international students, migrants and refugees within the City of Monash. When: Each workshop runs from 6pm to 8.30pm
SEMMA Australian Manufacturing BLUEPRINT forum 2: Energy Join SEMMA's forum series to hear current thinking and policy proposals for the manufacturing industry in the lead up to the Victorian State Election. Forum 2 addresses the global uncertainty impacting fuel prices, rising gas and electricity prices and gas supply shortages.
