GIRFT’s metrics for diabetes on the Model Health System (MHS) have been updated and improved in response to feedback from clinical teams. The programme’s diabetes compartment has been available on the MHS portal since 2022, featuring trust and system-specific data for diabetes care, amputations, surgical care and other hospital-wide metrics for inpatients with diabetes. Professor Andrew Hattersley, Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Exeter, discussed the importance of genetic testing for monogenic diabetes. A study published in PNAS details the role of the protein Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) in diabetic retinopathy – a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment. The findings show that PTX3 acts as a molecular driver of sterile inflammation in the diabetic retina, revealing that diabetic mice deficient in the protein were protected from visual impairment induced by the condition.
