Bowls 101 for King's College students-- Philly Akaruru Ōtāhuhu Railway Bowling Club hosted a comprehensive introduction to bowls for 54 King's College students on Tuesday. The extensive session featured expert coaching from head coach Les Smith plus, Christine Sibley and Jamie Cheng...with additional support from Terry Lister, Philly Akaruru, and Rangi (Sky). It's a big thanks to our coaches and our dedicated members for their hard work and commitment. It was heartening to see the students enjoying themselves, and we’re grateful to Kings College teachers Daryl Williams and his colleagues for choosing our club. 1-5 playing teams selected for first fixtureBowls Auckland is thrilled to announce the teams selected for the first fixture of the season, scheduled for Saturday, 28 September. Our players are gearing up to face off against Bay of Plenty, Northland and our fierce rivals, North Harbour, in what promises to be an exciting start to the season. Each athlete chosen has demonstrated outstanding skill, commitment, and teamwork throughout the six-week trial and selection process. A massive shoutout to Simon Tattersfield from Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation for delivering a brilliant keynote on facilities, covering trends, the rise of multi-code/multi-use spaces, and funding options. This session was part of our ongoing Club Leaders Programme, featuring quarterly workshops on key topics. We’re looking forward to welcoming our clubs to the next one! Opening Day delights-- Yvonne Lipsham Opening Day at Glen Eden began with a good muster of players, some playing the progressive format for the first time. This format is an excellent opportunity for all players to mingle and for new players to meet fellow bowlers. After a day filled with great camaraderie and friendly banter, the winners of the Walker Memorial Trophy were: Best Skip - Karen Kumiski, Best No. 2 - George Reti, and Best Lead - Ephraima Teiva. A big thank you to Shaz for her sponsorship, for looking after the chart, and for sorting the prizes. Vice President Graeme Storie officially welcomed the new season by introducing the executive, team welcoming first-year players, Samantha Nilson, Verne Christie, and Laurie Pittams along with new members, Barry Mai, Barry McCoy and Lenny Lau. Josie Stier was given the honour of rolling up the first jack and Melissa Stewart the first bowl. The day ended on a high note as many stayed to enjoy an evening of entertainment, with others Their selection of popular songs had everyone dancing—whether on the floor or in their seats. Historic day as new carpet green is unveiled-- Gerard Hulst On Saturday, 7 September 2024, Carlton Cornwall Bowls marked a significant milestone with its new carpet green opening. The event drew approximately 60 members and guests including local MP David Seymour, Martin McKenzie from Bowls New Zealand, and Peter Bennett, President of Remuera Bowling Club. The ceremony began with the flag-raising, followed by a karakia. Speakers praised the club’s bold decision to install an artificial green, highlighting the benefits of year-round play. The club also recognised the generous support from the Rawhiti Fund and Blue Waters Trust. Dignitaries and Life Members then cut the ribbon, officially opening the green. The season commenced with Brett Christie (1-5 Year Representative) placing the first mat, Alison Rennie (Bowls Auckland Selector) guarding the first head, Mary Upton (Junior Club Captain) rolling the first jack, and Estelle Hickey (National Sevens Champion) delivering the first bowl. Following a hearty morning tea, 54 members and guests competed in the Presidents Cup, a progressive triples event. Congratulations to the winning team: Melanie Swami (Lead), Jim William (Second), and Gerard Hulst (Skip). Here's to a fun, successful, and fantastic season ahead!
