TouchPoint - Let's get connected

Issue 50 - April 2015

This is the 50th issue of Douglas Scott's newsletter, so we thought why not go for a new look? After all, 50 is the new 30 right? We hope you enjoy it!

It's been a busy month here in Tower 12 at Douglas Scott HQ, with many new faces joining us and plenty to keep us busy! We've still had time to see what's been going on in the legal market though, and we've had some exciting events, so grab a cuppa and check out this month in legal.

We value your opinion too, so feel free to join the conversation on TwitterFacebook and Linkedin.

Trouble Brewing? Why growth in the UK's Craft Brewing industry could be good news for our commercial law firms

Britain is experiencing a Beer Boom. The growing popularity of craft beer and ales has spurred a tripling of applications to start breweries in the UK in the past five years. But is the UK about to experience what has already happened in the US?

We asked Intellectual Property expert Matthew Lingard of Chambers rated Legal 500 boutique Virtuoso Legal to take a view and at the same time offer some advice for anyone with aspirations of being the next Brew Dog; the Scottish craft beer brewer that has recently posted £18m of sales and seen its net profits rise to more than £2.3m.

Everything you need to know about a legal career in the Middle East

Last month we launched our suite of City Guides to help you out if you're relocating for work. Currently focused on the Middle East, keep an eye out for our UK and Asia guides soon to be released.

The City Guides are designed to provide you with an insight into the local legal landscape and at the same time provide some background information about the cost of living, cultural differences, and accommodation options to consider.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia guide is our latest release following on from guides on legal careers in Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Keep an eye on our social accounts for the inside track on future releases.

Why is 3 the magic number for lawyers

Lawyers are staying in their roles 6 months longer than they were in 2014 according to research we carried out whilst putting together our 2015 Salary and Benefits Benchmarker.

Lawyers average time in their current role is 3 years and 4 months in 2015 compared to 2 years 8 months in 2014. The number of legal professionals who had been in a job for between 1 and 2 years also increased from 28% in 2014 to 45% in 2015.

The Do's and Don'ts of the modern CV

Did you know that hirers spend on average 6 seconds before they make an initial 'fit' or 'no fit' decision...better make that time count then.

So if you are experiencing the 3 year itch, or just want to benchmark your old CV that has been gathering dust on file somewhere, then why not check out our latest infographic. It will provide you with all the pointers you will need and help you avoid the pitfalls that may - despite all your experience - stop you getting past that initial sift.

First impressions are important and with competition for the best roles at its highest you want to be standing out from the crowd.

The secret to being the Happiest Person in Legal

Earlier this year, using data gathered in our 2015 Salary and Benefits Benchmarker, year we named Philosophy Graduate and 7 years PQE Personal Injury Solicitor Tristan Sands our 2015 Happiest Person in Legal.

We thought it was about time we caught up with Tristan - who works for multi-award winning Personal Injury and Flight Delay Comensation Solicitors Bott and Co - to try and uncover the secret to his happiness.
