UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is proud to be ranked #1 in the Pittsburgh metro area and #2 in Pennsylvania. It is also marked as a high performing hospital in orthopaedics and rehabilitation.
We were also pleased to be recognized and highly ranked in all 11 pediatric specialities surveyed, including orthopaedics.
The recognition highlights our continued excellence across clinical care, research, and education, reinforcing UPMC-PittOrtho's reputation as a leader in advancing orthopaedic medicine and improving patient outcomes.

A Milestone in Orthopaedic Surgery: UPMC's Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) in Dublin Performs Europe’s First Robotic Shoulder Replacement

We are proud to recognize a significant advancement in orthopaedic care achieved by our colleagues at the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, Ireland, which recently completed Europe's first robotic-assisted shoulder replacement procedure.
The landmark surgery was performed by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Ms. Ruth Delaney and marks the introduction of Mako SmartRobotics technology for shoulder replacement surgery in Europe. The Mako Shoulder platform combines 3D preoperative planning with robotic-assisted technology and real-time intraoperative guidance, helping surgeons deliver highly personalized and precise shoulder replacement procedures.

BMRC Honors the 2026 Summer Student Research Program Cohort
|
In August, the BMRC concluded its 2026 Summer Student Research Program (SSRP), a nine-week immersive experience for undergraduate and medical students interested in musculoskeletal research.
The program provided students from the University of Pittsburgh and institutions across the country with hands-on research experience in BMRC laboratories, where they worked closely with faculty mentors, trainees, and research staff. Participants gained valuable skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication while also attending weekly educational and professional development seminars.
The program culminated in the annual Poster Presentation Day, where students presented their research findings to BMRC faculty, mentors, colleagues, and invited guests, including the Bethel family.

Guttu Maskalo, MD, PGY3 Resident, was honored recently in Pitt Med's Professionalism Accolades series. Dr. Maskalo and others were recongized by a Pitt Med student for providing excellent mentorship and leadership during a rotation in UPMC Mercy's Emergency Department.
Education is a pillar of our department and we are proud of Dr. Maskalo for going above and beyond to ensure that the future is bright for all of us, providers and patients alike.

UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S. Signing Day Celebrates Students Success In Pipeline Program

The end of summer marked another successful UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S. Signing Day celebrating the hard work of participating students.
Students, families, mentors, and program supporters gathered to recognize the graduates as they completed a summer of career exploration. The celebration featured a special award ceremony, personalized jerseys, opportunities for students to reflect on their experiences and a chance to take in the Pittsburgh Pirates game later that evening.
The event also showcased the power of mentorship and community partnership, highlighting the meaningful connections students developed throughout the program and the skills they gained.
We congratulate all of this year's M.O.V.E.S. graduates on their achievements and thank CNX and the CNX Mentorship Academy for its continued partnership and investment in creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders. We also extend our appreciation to the mentors, volunteers, and supporters whose dedication helped make this year's program a success.

UPMC Sports Medicine Surgeon Steven Rabuck Named Head Team Physician for Pitt Football
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and UPMC Sports Medicine are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven Rabuck to Head Team Physician for the University of Pittsburgh Football Team.
This appointment reflects the continued commitment of UPMC Sports Medicine to providing world-class medical care to student-athletes while fostering excellence in education, research, and athletic performance.
Dr. Rabuck brings extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels of competition. After earning his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he completed orthopaedic surgery residency training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine before returning to Pittsburgh to complete the renowned UPMC Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship under the mentorship of the late Dr. Freddie Fu.
An Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Rabuck serves on the teaching faculty for both the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship programs.
His experience includes work with NFL, NHL, and MLB organizations, as well as service as Head Team Physician for Carnegie Mellon University, Team Physician for Pitt Women's Basketball, and physician support for U.S. Soccer developmental teams.
