Howick’s triumph at Molecheck 7s & Auckland Cup!

-- Richard Ludbrook & Mark Andrews

Howick Bowling Club had a weekend to remember at the Molecheck 7s and Auckland Cup, not only as a host club and HQ but also walking away with two major titles! Our teams, a mix of age and experience certainly remind us, that bowls is a diverse sport crossing many boundaries and communities!

A stunning victory in the Women’s 7s
Howick’s women’s team faced a formidable Auckland BC side in the final, delivering a performance full of heart and determination.

  • 18-year-old Hannah Dawson (J3) set the tone with an epic 21-20 singles victory, showing nerves of steel edging out former Blackjacks, Wendy Jensen.
  • The Pairing of Rosemary Ackerley and Pauline Johnson put up a strong fight but fell short.
  • The Fours team of Lana Dowdell, Sue Peters, Dana Taylor (J2), and Ting Ting Ip (J3) stormed home in the final three ends to clinch the win.

Howick's Men’s 7s had a strong run
Howick’s men’s side—delivered a solid performance, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a tough Mt Albert team.

Auckland Cup champions!
Howick’s Auckland Cup team battled through a tough draw, taking down St Heliers Gold, Carlton Cornwall, and Blockhouse Bay to claim the title and prize money. The winning lineup: Colin Ayris-Webster (J4), Bryan Chapman, Wade Brealey (J2), Simon Gao (J3), Chris Hand (J3), Paul Blitvic, Bob Louden, and Tony Mitchinson.

Howick’s journey to success - development & dedication!
With 58 active 1-5 Year players, our commitment to coaching and player development is paying dividends. Many of these players started through the club’s Monday and Saturday coaching sessions, to rapidly progress through the ranks.

To the volunteers who made this event a success—catering, bar, greens, and coaching support and, to our Howick players, who played their hearts out and made the club proud... thank you! Now it's on to the Nationals!

Auckland squad locked in for National Intercentre

The stage is set for the 2025 National Intercentre, and Auckland has named its squad ready to compete against the country’s top regional teams in Wellington from 13 to 16 March.

With Men’s and Women’s teams battling across Singles, Pairs, and Fours, this event is known for its intensity and high-calibre play. Head Selector Alison Rennie believes the squad is in strong form following the Premier Octagonal, providing key insights ahead of selection.

Congratulations to our players—now it’s time to bring it on!

Squads celebrates with capping night

On Wednesday evening, Auckland’s National Intercentre squad gathered for a special capping ceremony, marking their selection for the 2025 campaign. More than just receiving their 'caps', the evening was a chance for players to reflect on their motivation—sharing 'who' or 'why' they play for their region.

The event also coincided with the 1-5 Year squad’s capping celebration as they prepare for their own challenge - the 1-5 Octagonal, taking place the same weekend as the Intercentre.

With both teams setting their sights on success, the night was a powerful reminder of the pride and passion behind bowls in Auckland.
