Speech screening: understand why you sound like you When: 6 July 2023, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Have you ever recorded yourself speaking only to delete it immediately because you don't like the way you sound? In this session, volunteers can undergo a speech screening so all participants can learn what to do to improve pitch, pace, timing and body language. We use technology to measure the volunteers' "speaker stats" both before and after. This workshop is suited for HDR students who want to understand and transform the way they present their research. Register here Improve your Confidence with Improv When: 25 July 2023, 1:00pm - 3:00pm Is there a performer inside you, dying to get out? Want to improve your public speaking skills or feel more comfortable when put on the spot? If you answered yes, or you just want to have a truckload of fun, improvisation is for you! This workshop presented by On The Fly Impro is a fun way to help you to build confidence and improve your communication skills. This workshop is based on theatre games and requires physical activity Register here Presenting your Research with Confidence When: 26 July 2023, 10:00am - 12:30pm If you’re a researcher then at some stage you are going to have to present your findings. It’s tempting to get up and just read your paper, but to really speak to your audience you need to be able to communicate skilfully and with conviction. We’ve all been to dull presentations so it’s worth your while spending a little time to learn how to do it properly. This workshop will provide a clear step-by-step structure that you can use again and again to give high quality presentations. It will cover: -How to make your message relevant to your audience-Preparing materials, notes, handouts, PowerPoint-Practicing-Delivery-How to handle questions-Dealing with nervousness. Register here Conducting Research Interviews When: 27 July 2023, 2:00pm - 3:30pm Research interviews are a fantastic way to build a rich, nuanced data set that may not be available through other research methods. In this workshop you’ll be given tips and techniques to structure your interview, engage respectfully with your interviewees to get the best outcomes, and manage and analyse your data. You’ll also have a chance to practice your interview skills with your fellow students. This multidisciplinary workshop is suitable for all HDR students who are planning to use interviews as a research methodology. In this session, Sharron Ferrier of Persuasive Presentations, will share how to be more confident when presenting your research. Register here eProcurement webinar When: 2 August 2023, 10:30am - 11:30am This workshop will explain why the University uses the eProcurement system and how to use it. It will cover getting access to the system through to receiving the goods. Register here Keeping track of your evidence: how to manage and integrate sources into your thesis. When: 3 August 2023, 12:30pm - 3:00pm It can be difficult to keep track of your citations as a HDR student, whether digitally or on paper. This workshop focuses on how you can keep track of your evidence for your thesis by using the referencing management system Zotero. The workshop will provide advice on how to maximise your note taking capabilities by using the software’s pdf annotator and report generation functionality. Other Training & Events Learn to program: Python Data Capture and Surveys with REDCap Data Manipulation and Visualisation in Python NewsStudent laptops now available for loan Need access to a laptop? Don’t panic! The Library has a new Laptop Self-Service Unit that provides students with 24/7 access to laptops that they can take off campus. This service is available to all students at the University of Adelaide. The unit is located in the Barr Smith Library on Level 3. There are currently 24 laptops which can be borrowed for either 7 days, or 4 hours if you just need quick access. We hope you enjoy this new service! Learn more Mental Health First Aid Feel more confident supporting those who may be suffering from mental health problems. Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) will teach you about the signs & symptoms of common disabling mental health problems, how to provide help, and how to access professional help. To make a booking contact jillian.allen@adelaide.edu.au Artificial Intelligence Library Guide The library has released a How-To guide on Artificial Intelligence which provides information about using generative AI tools for study in an ethical, responsible and evaluative way. The guide provides an introduction to some of the AI tools available, how to cite and acknowledge their use, and the use of such tools in research articles intended for publication. Volunteer opportunity for STEM students - Inspiring Women Program The Diversity Team in SET are looking for volunteers to assist in our Inspiring Women program. This program’s goal is to engage primary aged girls in STEM activities in a hands on and engaging way. We are looking for a number of current students to support our girls through the STEM activities by encouraging and giving gentle nudges in the right direction if they get a little distracted or confused. These students can be undergraduate or post graduate students but will need to be able to travel to North Terrace campus to contribute to the program. Lunch will be provided to volunteers. Please find Volunteer Expression of Interest form here. We will give confirm our volunteers at least 1 week notice before each session. CaRST Tip? While the time spent undertaking the placement isn’t eligible for CaRST credit, there’s a number of activities you can claim, including: •a project plan • a formal presentation • a written report • safety or technical training required and provided by the research-end user. Individual activities should be claimed separately , and up to five (5) activities can be claimed, to receive the max 30 credits. You will need to attach evidence of completion.
