Clinicians across the UK are being encouraged to review and comment on the latest National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for type 2 diabetes, which is currently in the development stage. The report covers care and management for adults with type 2 diabetes and provides education on dietary advice, cardiovascular risk, blood glucose levels and long-term complications. Newly updated guidance from the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP) has been published, providing further recommendations for healthcare professionals caring for people with diabetes. This report, on behalf of the UK Chemotherapy Board and JBDS, aims to provide the oncology/haemato-oncology multidisciplinary team with the advice to manage people with diabetes commencing anti-cancer/glucocorticoid therapy, as well as identifying individuals without a known diagnosis of diabetes who are at risk of developing hyperglycaemia and new onset diabetes. Healthcare professionals who adapted inpatient diabetes care to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic will be recognised with the revamped Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award. The focus of the 2022 award is: ‘The best interventions: Redesigning, rebuilding and maintaining safe inpatient diabetes care during COVID,’ with judges looking for applications that show hard evidence of benefit, that are translatable to other Trusts, are costed, are relatively simple and sustainable, and which have been commissioned or supported by an Acute Trust. New research has demonstrated that the Low Carb Program is just as successful as traditional obesity management services for losing weight and improving glycaemic control. According to the report, significant weight loss results and enhanced HbA1c levels were present in those who implemented the Low Carb Program.
