Last Thursday evening, September 12, during the 2024 Department of Medicine Kathy Griendling Honors and Award Celebration, DOM faculty and staff were honored for their outstanding contributions to their divisions, the department, the School of Medicine, and Emory University. It was truly a pleasure to gather in person to celebrate, mix, and mingle with these honorees and our colleagues. Thank you to the over 270 faculty and staff members who joined us either in person or over Zoom to cheer on their colleagues.

This celebration recognizes and celebrates both our extraordinary faculty and exceptional staff and honors those who have recently been promoted or who have earned clinical distinctions. Click the light blue button below for more information, including the full list of faculty and staff honored at this year's event. To read the Honors & Awards program from last night's celebration, click the dark blue button below.

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 through October 15

Did you know that Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 through October 15? The month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities. It commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large.

Carlos del Rio, MD

Throughout this month, we will feature our DOM Latinx colleagues. In today's DOM Bulletin, we recognize our new Chair, Carlos del Rio, MD, the FIRST Latino/x chair of the Department of Medicine. A graduate of La Salle University in Mexico City, Dr. del Rio first came to Emory as a visiting medical student in 1982. Nearly 40 years later, in 2021, the Carnegie Corporation of New York selected Dr. del Rio as part of their “Great Immigrants, Great Americans” campaign, which celebrates the wide-ranging contributions of immigrants to American life. To read about this honor, click HERE.

Infectious Disease Meets Opera: Three Pandemics. Three Centuries. One Story.

In a perfect intersection between infectious disease and art and culture, listen to Carlos del Rio, MD, TODAY on WABE's City Lights with Lois Reitzes as he chats with the Atlanta Opera's General & Artistic Director, Tomer Zvulun, about the Bohème Project, one story told three ways, examining three different pandemics– tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19 –over three centuries.
City Lights aired today at 1 p.m. and again TONIGHT at 10 p.m. To listen to the recorded interview, CLICK HERE.

2024 Researcher Appreciation Day

In recognition of Researcher Appreciation Day, the Recognitions Committee at the School of Medicine sent out a call for nominations for researchers across the school who are advancing the knowledge base in their field. The following DOM researchers were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their groundbreaking research, development of new technologies, and continued pursuit of novel and innovative ideas. Division of Hospital Medicine Hosts Fifth Annual Research Day

By: Mary Ann Kirkconnell Hall, MPH, and Maha Sulieman, MD

On August 29, the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine (EDHM) gathered for its fifth annual Research Day, where 20 teams of EDHM faculty and staff showcased their research. Two distinguished faculty members—Vibha Lama, MD, MS, and Jessica Harding, PhD —spoke about the Ease of Research Initiative and Emory Health Services Research Center, respectively. The EDHM Research Day Committee surprised Daniel Hunt, MD, with the Hospital Medicine Scholarship Visionary Award and Jasmah Hanna with a special honorarium for her contributions to planning and organizing EDHM Research Day through the years.

After the first round of presentations, finalists were selected to present their projects to the full judging committee. W. Wyatt Wilson, MD, and his team won first place; Robert DeStefano, MD, and his team won first runner-up; and Hasan Shabbir, MD, and his team won second runner-up. The full abstract book can be accessed HERE.

Former Emory IM and Global Health Distinction Program Resident Publishes a manuscript in Cureus

Krisha Desai, MD (Emory IM Resident Alumni Class of 2022 and Global Health Distinction Program resident), published a manuscript in Cureus, Journal of Medical Science, detailing the collaboration with Addis Ababa University (AAU) colleagues in Ethiopia to deliver her virtual POCUS workshop. In low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia, the availability of formal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training remains limited, and there is limited data on how to train providers in these countries to use POCUS. The manuscript describes the successful virtual training workshop designed for physicians in Ethiopia and led by Dr. Desai and colleagues, with the intention of serving as a model that could guide similar initiatives.

Thank you to Russell Kempker, MD, MSc, and Paulina Rebolledo, MD, for leading the Global Health Distinction Program and creating opportunities for initiatives like these. Also, many thanks to Manpreet Malik, MD, for mentoring resident Krisha Desai to create and deliver POCUS workshops remotely and in-person. With this initiative, the Emory residency program has been able to support the use of two ultrasound devices by the AAU house staff to directly improve patient care abroad.

The Global Health Distinction Program hopes to continue to collaborate and build on this foundation with AAU to make meaningful differences in patient care, education, and discovery. For those interested in POCUS training, see the October 17-18 POCUS workshop details below.

Healthy Aging Tips for Healthy Aging Month 2024

Just in time for 2024 Healthy Aging Month this September, we've asked our faculty members from the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology for their top tips for healthy living as we age.

"We are what we DO. Keep moving!"
- from Madeleine E. Hackney, Ph.D.

“Remove the saltshaker from the dining table. As older adults are more likely to have high blood pressure and heart disease, extra salt can result in the prescription of many extra medicines.”
-from Quratulain "Annie" Syed, MD, AGSF

“Know your medications! Keep an updated list including any vitamins, herbals, and over-the-counter medications.”
-from Anna Mirk, MD, Associate Professor

The Curbsiders podcast: Hospital Medicine Edition

Updated Message for SOM Qualtrics Users

In the September 2 DOM Bulletin, we announced the Qualtrics transition from the SOM to the Emory instance of Qualtrucs. Since then, the recommendation has changed. Please read the new guidance below from SOM Information Tech Service.

Instead of changing over to the Emory instance of Qualtrics, please continue to use the SOM Qualtrics instance (https://emorymedicine.qualtrics.com). Though, in theory, all Emory users of Qualtrics would be on one platform, we have learned the SOM Qualtrics instance automatically includes features tailored for SOM faculty, students, and staff. It also allows brand administrators to be able to identify SOM users more efficiently. Therefore, the decision was reached to keep the SOM Qualtrics instance and continue usage of it.

If you have already migrated to Emory instance, there is no harm in it. Using the Emory instance will allow you easier collaboration with those outside of SOM. It is recommended that you decide which instance works best for your survey needs.

Again, please disregard the previous message to create a Qualtrics account on the Emory Qualtrics instance and migrate Qualtrics surveys. Our goal is to not disrupt your typical business processes. Therefore, we will remain on the SOM Qualtrics instance moving forward.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility. Should you have any questions, please contact Yvonne Longs.
