Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 through October 15 Did you know that Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 through October 15? The month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities. It commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large. Throughout this month, we will feature our DOM Latinx colleagues. In today's DOM Bulletin, we recognize our new Chair, Carlos del Rio, MD, the FIRST Latino/x chair of the Department of Medicine. A graduate of La Salle University in Mexico City, Dr. del Rio first came to Emory as a visiting medical student in 1982. Nearly 40 years later, in 2021, the Carnegie Corporation of New York selected Dr. del Rio as part of their “Great Immigrants, Great Americans” campaign, which celebrates the wide-ranging contributions of immigrants to American life. Former Emory IM and Global Health Distinction Program Resident Publishes a manuscript in Cureus Krisha Desai, MD (Emory IM Resident Alumni Class of 2022 and Global Health Distinction Program resident), published a manuscript in Cureus, Journal of Medical Science, detailing the collaboration with Addis Ababa University (AAU) colleagues in Ethiopia to deliver her virtual POCUS workshop. In low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia, the availability of formal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training remains limited, and there is limited data on how to train providers in these countries to use POCUS. The manuscript describes the successful virtual training workshop designed for physicians in Ethiopia and led by Dr. Desai and colleagues, with the intention of serving as a model that could guide similar initiatives. Thank you to Russell Kempker, MD, MSc, and Paulina Rebolledo, MD, for leading the Global Health Distinction Program and creating opportunities for initiatives like these. Also, many thanks to Manpreet Malik, MD, for mentoring resident Krisha Desai to create and deliver POCUS workshops remotely and in-person. With this initiative, the Emory residency program has been able to support the use of two ultrasound devices by the AAU house staff to directly improve patient care abroad. The Global Health Distinction Program hopes to continue to collaborate and build on this foundation with AAU to make meaningful differences in patient care, education, and discovery. For those interested in POCUS training, see the October 17-18 POCUS workshop details below. One Month until the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop POCUS Course Details Dates: October 17–18, 2024 This two-day Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Course, organized by the Division of Hospital Medicine, is a hands-on experience to learn the techniques of bedside ultrasound. The workshop is designed to maximize the participant’s time practicing ultrasound skills on live models. For more information, please contact Dr. Sneha Neurgaonkar and Monica Perkins.
