Remember Beanie Babies? Pet rocks? Macramé plant hangers? Bell-bottomed polyester pants? Cabbage Patch kids? These were all very popular products once upon a time, such that “everybody was buying them,” as we say. They are products you could probably not find now because no one makes them any more. Advertisers know very well that people go along with trends, and they presented these trendy products successfully; then they did not and moved to some other trendy product.

It is human nature to “jump on band wagons,” to do what “everyone else is doing,” and to buy products that “everyone else is buying.” Sometimes it can even be our nature to jump on religious bandwagons. If some religious website guru says you are simply not being reverent unless you receive Holy Communion kneeling, then we see an uptick in people kneeling for Communion. If some other influential religious publication says that we should freely experiment with the liturgy, then we see more experimentation with the liturgy. If the news is constantly reminding us of the plight of wildfire victims, we become very generous in reaching out to them in their need – until the news cycle diminishes, and then they are “out of sight, out of mind.” Read more...

“More than a century ago, in 1925, in the humble town of Molo, Iloilo (Philippines), a woman of remarkable faith and courage, Mother Rosario Arroyo, responded to God’s call with a resolute ‘fiat.’ A member of a prominent family, and with a heart devoted to the Lord, she gave her ‘yes’ and laid the foundation for the establishment of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines.” — welcome address by Mother Nemia Daral, prioress general of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines

The 100th anniversary of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines marked a milestone in their commitment to faith, service and education.

Rooted in prayer and the Dominican spirit of truth, their humble beginnings — guided by the vision of Venerable Mother Rosario Arroyo — have grown into a missionary congregation now serving in the Philippines, Hawaii, the continental U.S., Kenya, Italy, Japan and Australia. Read more...

HOPE Services Hawai‘i Marks 15 Years of Faith in Action

From the Office for Social Ministry

“May hope fill your hearts…Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring.” - Pope Francis Opening Message for Jubilee Year December 2024

One of the many memorable actions Pope Francis did before he passed was to decree that the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica be opened on Christmas Eve 2024, inaugurating the Jubilee Year calling all to be pilgrims of hope with the marginalized suffering around the world. “Each day we meet people who are poor or impoverished; they may even be our next-door neighbors. Often, they are homeless or lack sufficient food for the day. They suffer from exclusion and indifference on the part of many. It is scandalous that in a world possessed of immense resources… the poor continue to be the majority of the planet’s population, billions of people.”

Pope Leo XIV echoes his predecessor’s call connecting hope with the poor in his message for the 2025 World Day of the Poor this fall: "The poor can be witnesses to a strong and steadfast hope, precisely because they embody it in the midst of uncertainty, poverty, instability and marginalization.” The new pope’s letter also acknowledged the everyday saints who regularly bear Witness to Jesus through works of charity in soup kitchens, shelters, schools, care homes and community centers where people are welcomed, seen, and heard. “How many of these quiet signs of hope often go unnoticed and yet are so important for setting aside our indifference and inspiring others to become involved in various forms of volunteer work!”

Here in Hawaii, that same spirit of hope in service with others in need shines strongly through an organization that consistently lives up to its name. HOPE Services Hawaii is celebrating its 15th anniversary of inspiring hope and changing lives. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Augustine of Hippo
1572–1641
Memorial - August 21

Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis, known as Augustine, was born in Tagaste, present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria, North Africa. He was the oldest of three children, including a younger brother and sister. His father, Patricius (Patrick) was not wealthy but had civic responsibilities in his city, which was part of the Roman Empire. His father was a pagan, known for his violent temper and immoral lifestyle. Augustine’s mother, known today as Saint Monica, struggled with alcohol at an early age but overcame that vice. She was raised a Christian and wholeheartedly embraced her Catholic faith. Despite suffering due to her husband’s temper and adulterous behavior, Monica was a model of charity, and her prayers eventually converted her whole family. Read more...
