Welcome!

Hello, and welcome back to another month of this lovely, lanternfly infested year. We always look forward to October because it brings great things like cooler weather, student's fall break and homecoming, and midterms.

With that, October also brings a plethora of acknowledgements to the community of people with disabilities. You'll see a list of the various (and only a shortened version) Awareness month celebrations listed below. An important one which we are giving the spotlight this month by presenting lots of opportunities for employment, internships, or participaring in research studies, is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The theme for this year is Advancing Access and Equity, and along with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, we hope you'll take advantage of the many opportunities being made available to you, and other individuals with disabilities.

Enjoy the month, and the beginning of autumn weather! We'll see you next time.

Getting Started with Pitt Global Experiences: Expanding Your Global Mindset

Last month, the Pitt Global Experience Office (PittGEO) hosted an informative presentation for students registered with DRS. PittGEO has reinvented traditional study abroad and made it more powerful, personalized, and accessible than ever before. With PittGEO, the avenues for engagement at Pitt are truly without boundaries, featuring over 350 program types ranging from international programs in 75 countries to various domestic programs throughout the United States. PittGEO has lifted every barrier to an incredible global education, no matter a student’s major.

Global experiences can support student’s academic, personal, and professional development. Notably, students who study abroad have higher graduation rates and higher GPA's. Further, students who engage in these experiences develop a wide range of personal skills such as flexibility, self-reliance, global awareness, interpersonal communication, intercultural communications, problem solving, and language skills. Overwhelmingly, employers state that the intercultural skills of their employees are important to organizational success. And most importantly, global experiences are fun!

Program prices are available to fit every budget and numerous financial aid and scholarship opportunities are available.  DRS is proud to offer the Kevin Cecil Study Abroad Scholarship, which provides students financial assistance for a summer study abroad experience. This scholarship aims to empower persons with disabilities to go abroad and offset the cost by offering two $1,000 scholarships each year. Visit the DRS website to learn more about the Kevin Cecil Study Abroad Scholarship

PittGEO peer advisors and professional staff are available to speak with you about goals and interests and to set you on the path to find the right program. Stop by the office in 802 WPU Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for walk-in appointments or schedule an appointment with a team member globalexperiences@pitt.edu. Happy travels!
