Science Communication Courses for Researchers

Do you need some help designing your scientific poster? Would you like to learn to draw scientific graphics and figures in Adobe Illustrator? Are you interested in creating your own captivating scientific video? Are you a researcher feeling like you're lost at sea when it comes to AI?

CaRST has partnered with science communication agency Animate your Science to bring you 4 incredible courses around these four themes!

  • How to Design an Award-Winning Scientific Poster
  • Learn to draw in Adobe Illustrator: by scientists for scientists
  • Lights, Camera, Impact: How to Produce Captivating Science Videos
  • AI for Researchers:  Unlocking New Potentials and Avoiding Pitfalls

CaRST is sponsoring licences for a limited number of researchers to enrol in these courses. These are online, self-paced courses and eligible for CaRST credit. Selected students will be enrolled into the courses from June and have 12 months of access. To register your interest, please complete and submit the online expression of interest form.

Please note students will only be selected for a single course during each round, and due to limited capacity students in their second and third year of HDR will be prioritised during the selection process.

EndNote for Reference Management - Advanced

This session is designed to ensure you get the most out of EndNote by providing guidance on some of the more advanced features of EndNote. You will learn how to customise and manage your EndNote library, add and alter referencing styles, edit and modify your Word document using Cite While you Write and save and backup your Endnote library. Basic knowledge of and experience using EndNote is assumed for those booking this course. Register here.

The Imposter Syndrome

Why do successful people often feel like frauds? How can it be that so many clever, competent and capable people can feel that they are just one step away from being exposed as a complete fraud? Despite evidence that they are performing well they can still have that lurking fear that at any moment someone is going to tap them on the shoulder and say, “We need to have a chat”. This webinar will explain why high performing people often doubt their abilities and find it hard to enjoy their successes. It will also show the links to perfectionism and self-handicapping strategies such as procrastination, avoidance and overcommitment. Register here.

Turbocharge your Writing

Would you like to know the secret to high output, low stress scholarly writing? In academia it is often assumed that writing comes naturally. However, an overwhelming body of research shows that there are very clear and practical strategies that can greatly increase your writing productivity. This workshop will help you to understand: why it’s hard to get started; how we deliberately use distractions to slow down writing; the principles of quick starting; how to deal with destructive internal beliefs; how to set a writing plan and stick to it; how to set achievable goals by writing in a silo; how to greatly increase the number of actual words you produce; and how to clarify your thinking, and improve the quality of your work. Register here.

The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. Undertaking a PhD is also very different from other types of study so it can be difficult to know what to expect from the supervisory relationship. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Information Session

Can you sell your thesis in just 3 minutes? The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an annual skills development activity that challenges Higher Degree by Research students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes using a single PowerPoint slide. It is not an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing-down’ research; the oration should engage the audience without reducing research to entertainment value alone. This information session will provide information on the rules and requirements of the competition, the competition format and how to successfully sell your thesis in 3 minutes! Exploring Chi-square and correlation in R

In this hands-on training, we will traverse into the realm of inferential statistics in R, beginning with correlation and reliability. We will present a brief conceptual overview and the R procedures for computing reliability and correlation (Pearson’s r, Spearman’s Rho and Kendall’s tau) in real world datasets. Traversing t tests in R

This workshop aims to familiarise you with basic statistical concepts in R from reading in and manipulating data, checking assumptions, statistical tests and visualisations. Introduction to Systematic Searching for SET

This workshop will provide an introduction to systematic searching and literature reviews for SET disciplines, focusing on how approaches to searching and reviewing research can be modified for non-health areas. Exploring ANOVAs in R

This workshop covers one and two-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) and their non-parametric counterparts in R. Open Access Publishing

Publishing open access via Read and Publish

University of Adelaide researchers now have access to 19 Read & Publish agreements. The agreements provide researchers with the opportunity to publish their research open access without needing to pay individual article processing charges. This session will cover the benefits of publishing via Read & Publish, which publishers are included, and the steps involved in publishing. Introduction to Machine Learning in Python

In this live coding workshop series from Intersect, we explain the fundamentals of Machine Learning (using Python) and guide you on how to make better informed decisions on how to leverage Machine Learning in your research. This 3-part series includes:

Please note the prerequisites which are listed on the course page for each course. Each course is eligible for 3-6 credits in Domain A for CaRST. Credits are equivalent to the course duration.

 

CaRST Tips

Do you have sufficient evidence? One of the most common reasons activities are not approved for CaRST credit is because of insufficient evidence. For training not offered by CaRST, the following evidence should be provided:

  • A copy of (or link to) the official course description, which states the course duration or participation requirements (hours per week).
  • A course program, schedule or timetable which confirms the date/times of the training.
  • A completion certificate (or similar).

Examples of acceptable evidence for the wide range of eligible experiential activities can be found on the experiential and other commercialisation & engagement activities pages.
