Becoming a Professional Researcher: Proactive PhDing DayWhen: Tuesday, 25 June 2024 @ 10.00 - 16.15 Where: In-person, Lanchester Library (Frederick Lanchester Building, Gosford Street, Coventry CV1 5DD). You will get the opportunity to meet experts including librarians, career consultants and researcher developers. You will also receive a tour of the library facilitated by the PGR Librarian and library staff. Cold food buffet provided for lunch. Sessions include:

Call for PGR Volunteers:Your view on the Doctoral and Researcher College webpagesAt the Doctoral and Researcher College (formerly the Doctoral College & Centre), we are looking to develop our webpages to make them more effective and accessible for the PGR and Staff community. We are asking for PGR volunteers to attend a meeting on Monday 15th July @ 2pm – 3:30pm in Swan Room, Elm Bank. We will offer an update on how we envisage the webpages can be developed, and we are seeking your feedback and insights in this process. We will also be inviting staff members from across the Research Centres to attend. If you would like to attend, please email Dr Tom Webb (Researcher Developer – Projects) via ad9490@coventry.ac.uk. Please note that places at the meeting are subject to availability and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. If you can’t attend but would like to offer your views on how the Doctoral and Researcher College webpages could be developed, please send these via email to the above contact. All feedback is appreciated. Understanding Risk AssessmentsAn important part of planning your research is to ensure you have identified and are controlling any risks to the health and safety of yourself, your colleagues and your participants. This session will give you an understanding of the key concepts of risk assessment and how they should be applied to your research. Good understanding of this process will support your ethics applications for your research proposals.

This session will focus on the basics of networking and how it can be helpful in your job search. CV templates will also be provided to guide the CV presentation. At the end of the session, the participants will have the opportunity to ask questions in relation to the three CV styles and discuss specific elements of their own CV. In this session, you will gain first-hand insight into what the day in the life of an MSL looks like, how to communicate skills gained during a PhD to recruitment managers, and how to start networking to land a MSL position. Simon will answer your questions on what MSL roles actually entail and what skills you should be focusing on developing during your PhD if you are interested in an industry-based role after graduating. Power & Politics in the Neoliberal University: A Dialogic DiscussionThe topics of discussion will revolve around the political economy of neoliberalism in higher education, the politics of publishing, issues of class, race, status, and hierarchy, new managerialism, workloads and work-life balance, dealing with critical feedback and rejection, managing conflict, and staying true to your values as both an academic and a person. We consider how universities could be re-directed to serve democracy and what we can all do to achieve this.

We hope those that were able to attend enjoyed the online and in-person RCAD format as much as we did. If you haven’t done so already, we would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes telling us about your experience at RCAD24. Your answers will be used to compile a RCAD24 evaluation report and your feedback will help us with the design of future PGR conferences.
The survey will close on Monday, 17 June @ 10.00. This evaluation is anonymous and should take 4-5 minutes to complete.
