STORY AND CASE
A 77-year-old man with hypertension and type 2 diabetes presented with 5 days of worsening nausea, vomiting, non-bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and jaundice following a cruise to Mexico. He reported eating a sandwich prior to reboarding after a shore excursion and experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms within <1 hour. He was hospitalized locally, diagnosed with hepatitis A, and treated supportively. On his flight home, symptoms worsened, and he presented to the hospital directly from the airport. On arrival, he was afebrile but mildly tachycardic without hypotension. Initial labs were significant for total bilirubin 8.8, alkaline phosphatase 218, platelets 120, INR 1.35, and normal aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Abdominal ultrasound was non-diagnostic. Viral studies were ordered. Due to
concern for biliary obstruction, he underwent magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealing acute gangrenous cholecystitis with early perforation, small pericholecystic and hepatic capsular collections, and splenomegaly. He emergently underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with purulence noted around the gallbladder, requiring surgical drain placement and antibiotic therapy.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Changes to SOM Promotions and Tenure Guidelines
In March, the Council of Chairs approved changes to two of the benchmark tables in the School of Medicine Guidelines for appointments, promotions, and tenure. The changes were created to address the following issues: - Clarity on the funding requirement for national/international reputation and leadership in the scholarship area of distinction.
Reclassification of some of the benchmarks for national/international achievement and reputation in teaching. It also adds benchmarks for digital media, which will mainly benefit those planning to go forward for
promotion to full professor in the teaching area of distinction.
These changes were made to normalize the success rates of promotion to full professor regardless of area of distinction and take effect immediately.

Get to know Dean Sandra Wong
"When I come to a new place, I believe my role as a leader, part of a leadership team, is to pull all those individuals together, to make that momentum happen. Everybody does great things on their own, but when you can see a team pull together, actually move faster toward a higher trajectory, that’s the key. That’s what gets me excited. It's about inquiry, understanding where the bottlenecks are and fixing those areas. This is not change for change’s sake, it’s about managing change that’s already happening, assuring that key milestones are met, constantly looking for ways to improve."—Sandra Wong, MD, MS, shares in a recent Q&A conducted by Mary Loftus, Editor of the Emory Medicine Magazine.
On March 22, we welcomed Sandra Wong, MD, MS, as dean of the School of Medicine. Before she officially came on board, with "everything I own in a truck headed toward Atlanta except for two suitcases,” Dean Wong answered a few questions about her leadership style, her passion for health care delivery, and being the first female dean of Emory School of Medicine.
