CABE Essay Competition

Students are invited to write an essay of no more than 750 words that addresses the topic of thriving in careers with an associate or bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Deadline: October 10, 2023

Join us in helping psychology students see how psychology is used in the workforce! The APA Committee on Associate and Baccalaureate Education (CABE) would like you to share your thoughts about how your classes in psychology have helped prepare you to be successful in the “real world”. Do you need some help articulating the skills and experiences you have acquired?  Check out the Skillful Psychology Student (PDF, 56KB) to explore some of the skills that students can gain through coursework in psychology. How have the skills and knowledge you acquired through your psychology education helped you with job preparation?

CABE will give out up to two awards of $250 each to the undergraduate students (current majors or 2022-2023 academic year graduates) who submit the best essays on the theme of Thriving in careers with an associate or bachelor's degree.

Please think about the following:

  • How have you been able to apply the skills learned in your psychology classes to your current job or career path?
  • What is your advice for students in psychology about how they can apply what they have learned to explore different career paths or be happy and successful in the workplace and beyond?

While you studied psychology, you may be working (or planning to work) in business, education, health, social services, criminal justice, or any other field. To help current and future psychology students, we encourage you to write an essay (up to 750 words) that explains how you are applying what you learned in undergraduate psychology to the workplace. Essays that illustrate or otherwise support the values of equity, diversity and inclusion are particularly welcomed.

The deadline for submission is October 10, 2023. Entries will be judged for impact, relevance to the call, and quality of writing by a panel of psychology faculty members who serve as CABE members.

Students who win the award will receive $250 and have their essay published on the award website. Students may also be featured on the APA webpage in the Careers With a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology section.
