Now that's something worth celebrating!

In 2025, ZELLCHEMING - the Association of Pulp and Paper Chemists and Engineers - will look back on 120 years of history. At the same time, the ZELLCHEMING-Expo will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year. We have decided to combine the two anniversaries - and celebrate 195 years in style!

This impressive figure is the result of a unique success story, which is due to the commitment and work of our members in the professional and technical committees and the association's management. These committees and their initiatives have been and continue to be involved in a variety of ways in shaping the economic development and political framework conditions of our industry - in Germany, Europe and around the world. The ZELLCHEMING-Expo, a trade fair that attracts several thousand visitors every year, is an expression and proof of this close and fruitful cooperation.

The highlight of the 195th anniversary celebrations is the ZELLCHEMING Celebration Gala under the motto "Shaping the future together". The Terrassensaal of the RheinMain Congress Center will provide an appropriate, elegant setting for this event, which is already being prepared as an unforgettable experience: The gala evening will highlight the various aspects and milestones of the association's development with an individual touch - but above all, we want to look ahead and bring a generation-spanning idea for the future of ZELLCHEMING to the stage!

Let's raise a glass together to our valued professional exchange and our Expo and make the ZELLCHEMING Celebration Gala a top-class, rousing and entertaining celebration for all the senses: an evening that duly honors and embodies the vitality, creative power and cosmopolitanism of the association, its members and this unique industry!

Award of the Hans-Clemm-Medal to Peter Horn

In 1936, the Association established this commemorative coin, which can be awarded for "achievements in the field of pulp and paper technology or for special service to the Association. This is defined as: scientific, technical, literary or organizational work that is likely to further the nonprofit efforts of the Association to promote all aspects of pulp and paper technology in an outstanding manner.

After studying paper technology with Professor Brecht, Peter Horn began his career at Feldmühle in Viersen in 1967. After various internships at Feldmühle's Reisholz and Kabel mills, he transferred to the Arnsberg mill after two years. Here, as production manager, he took over the production of board, including its surface treatment using the cast coating process. Just five years later, his expertise led him to the sister mill in Baienfurt with its integrated pulp mill.

Following the sale of the mill to the Swedish Stora Group, Peter Horn is appointed mill manager. This was followed by the merger of the Stora Group with the Finnish Enso Group. Here Peter Horn became Technical Director for
and Development for the Stora Enso Group. He was responsible for 10 mills in Sweden, France, Belgium, England, Spain and Germany.

During this time, Peter Horn began to successfully conduct employee training courses and related presentations in English and French. In 2000, he began working with the Association of German Paper Mills (VDP) to recruit young people into the paper engineering profession.

For a total of 16 years, Peter Horn successfully carried out the associated campaigns, together with extensive mill tours, and thus made a decisive contribution to attracting young paper engineers to our industry.

With the award of the Hans Clemm Medal, ZELLCHEMING would like to pay tribute to Mr. Horn's long-standing commitment to teaching and research.

Women4Paper: A strong network with an exemplary character

On the initiative of Petra Hanke, Managing Director of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH, and Susanne Haase, ZELLCHEMING Project Manager Communications, a group of women from the pulp and paper industry founded the platform "Women4Paper" about five years ago. Today, the active core consists of more than 50 female representatives and the group now has 400 followers on LinkedIn. Similar projects have been set up in neighboring countries and industries.

In this permanent committee, which is affiliated with the ZELLCHEMING association, women working in the wood fiber industry, both in science and in production or marketing, exchange ideas. The Women4Paper Meetings & Workshops take place quarterly, as online meetings and as a physical event at the ZELLCHEMING-Expo.

Representatives of Women4Paper also enriched the Paper Engineers' Symposium on October 11 in Munich with a session on diversity. The focus topic "How the strengths of women can contribute to increasing the added value in the company" hit the nail on the head, and the powerful statements of the panel participants led to a lot of positive feedback from the audience.

The magazine "Papier kann mehr", which is published by the German paper industry association "Die Papierindustrie", also reports on the success of ZELLCHEMING Women4Paper in its current issue.

The last regular Women4Paper online meeting took place on October 21. The topic: "Networks and networking - learning from other women's networks and how to use LinkedIn successfully" was very well received with about 20 participants. Sigrid Tertinegg, Marketing Manager at GAW technologies, explained why professional networking is especially important for women and how they can best update their profile and post, like and comment.

Good reasons to join ZELLCHEMING

Johannes Reiners, Plant Manager Klingele Paper Weener SE & Co. KG

  • What role does the paper, pulp or fiber-based industry play for you/your company/institute?

Paper is a versatile product that is constantly evolving. In my opinion, paper and fiber-based products are drivers of innovation and a key element for a sustainable future. Of course, in addition to the finished product, the fiber as a starting point is also an exciting topic. In what composition and in what quantities will recovered paper be available in the future? What is the plant origin of the fiber of the future? These are just two of the many aspects that will occupy us.

  • What made you decide to become a member of ZELLCHEMING?

The ZELLCHEMING association offers the opportunity to further promote our industry and our products. As the members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, such an extensive network will also broaden your own horizons.

  • In what way would you like to contribute to ZELLCHEMING?
As a packaging paper manufacturer, I would like to share some of the challenges we face.

Technical Committee Finishing of Paper and Paperboard (FPPB)

At the General Assembly on June 19, 2024, the members of the ZELLCHEMING Association approved the transformation of the Technical Subcommittee of the Board and the Board Production Technical Committee (PBTC) into a Technical Committee. The constituent meeting will take place on November 21, 2024 at PK Varel in Varel.

The scope of the Technical Committee includes all systems after the paper winder (slitter rewinder, sheeter, packaging...) up to the reel or format store.

The Technical Committee deals with:

  • The technical equipment of the finishing process with machines and systems
  • Automation and rationalization
  • Planning, maintenance and modernization of machinery and equipment in the finishing process
  • Internal transport and material logistics
  • Equipment specific quality issues
  • Health and safety issues
  • Human resource issues

The work of the Technical Committee is limited to paper, board and paperboard converting (tissue is not an issue).

It works closely with the Technical Committees

  • for Paper Making (PMAK)
  • for Paperboard Technology (PBTC).

The provisional chairman of the technical committee is Helmut Schmitz, Head of Finishing, Moritz J. Weig GmbH & Co. KG.

Technical Committee Chemical Additives (CHAD)

The ZELLCHEMING Technical Committee CHAD met on October 10th in Munich. Dr. Mathias Stanzel, co-founder of the Darmstadt-based start-up company CeraSleeve, is a new member of the committee. A warm welcome to him!

Dr. Mathias Stanzel, Co-Founder CeraSleeve

As a chemist researching new paper coatings and technologies in the field of paper chemistry, the paper, pulp and fiber industry is fundamental for Dr. Stanzel to learn about current challenges and strategic interpretations from these industries and to contribute to them as a member of the CHAD Technical Committee.

Investment in public charging infrastructure by Drewsen Spezialpapiere

The ZELLCHEMING member company has put two public e-car charging stations into operation, including a 50 kW fast charging station. In addition, three charging stations have been installed in the company parking lot exclusively for employees. Following the installation of free charging stations for e-bikes last year, employees can now also charge their electric cars at a reduced rate.

Employees in front of a new charging point

"More and more people are opting for electric mobility and want to be able to charge their vehicles conveniently while at work or on a visit. With the charging stations we are making a further contribution to more sustainable mobility," explains Dr. Martin Siebert, Technical Director of Drewsen Spezialpapiere. With a total of five charging stations and ten charging points, including two fast charging points, the specialty paper manufacturer is promoting sustainable mobility and using green electricity directly from Lachendorf. This investment underlines the company's commitment to an environmentally friendly future.

Pilot customer Smurfit Westrock benefits from new HighPerformance Press from Voith

The installation of the high-performance press in the press section of Smurfit Westrock Roermond Papier's PM 1 represents a milestone in the development of the product. According to Voith, a ZELLCHEMING member company, after a rebuild time of only 38 hours and a smooth start-up, production was back to full capacity.

According to the supplier, the benefits were immediately apparent: the high-performance press increases the dryness of the paper web after the press section and enables Smurfit Westrock to make significant steam savings in the dryer section. As a result, significant amounts of energy and CO2 emissions can be saved. Sjon Vrieze, Technical Operations Manager at Smurfit Westrock Roermond Papier, explains: "Thanks to the innovative HighPerformance Press solution from Voith, we can save 7,500 tons of steam and 1,113 tons of CO2 per year. This is an important contribution to our decarbonization roadmap and shows the potential for further paper machine rebuilds at Smurfit Westrock.

Fibers Symposium for the first time as cooperation between ZELLCHEMING and PTS

Plant fibers are the basis for the production of paper and related products. These fibers, which are currently produced primarily from wood, will be a sought-after raw material in the future, as the usable resource of wood is becoming scarcer due to climate change, regulatory cuts, and increasing competition for services, while at the same time demand is rising in all processing sectors. In order to avoid fiber supply bottlenecks in the future, it will be necessary to use non-wood fibers on a much larger scale than in the past. These raw materials can come from deliberately cultivated fiber plants or be by-products of other industries, such as the food industry. High performance fibers can certainly be produced. However, in order to develop economically and socio-economically acceptable business models, it is crucial to understand the interrelationships between availability aspects, logistics, fiber origin, fiber preparation and the effect in the paper structure compared to the product-side requirement profiles.

In keeping with the tradition of the PTS Fiber Symposia, the topic of the fiber supply of the future will be on the agenda in 2024. The event, which will take place on December 4 and 5 in the pre-Christmas atmosphere of Dresden, is a joint initiative of ZELLCHEMING and PTS and will attempt to classify the complex aspects.

  • Our goal is to bridge emerging needs, technological possibilities and industrial realities.

Companies and organizations have the opportunity to present their developments and services in the accompanying exhibition. We are also pleased to be able to offer a platform for the presentation of technical posters, thus covering a wide range of perspectives. We are looking forward to two days of lively exchange and inspiring presentations!
