New Faculty

We are thrilled to announce that Timothy Anderson, MD (pictured below, left) recently joined CP3, when he returned to Pitt as a member of the Pitt GIM faculty. After completing residencies at Pitt and UPMC and fellowship at UCSF, Dr. Anderson was a clinician-investigator in the Division of General Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and the Lead for Improving Value in Healthcare at the BIDMC Center for Healthcare Delivery Science. Dr. Anderson's primary research interests are identifying strategies to improve the quality of care delivered to older adults with chronic conditions and to reduce the delivery of low-value prescribing and diagnostic testing. He is currently funded by a K76 Beeson award from the National Institute of Aging. We’re looking forward to the continued outstanding work from Dr. Anderson and new collaborations!

New Pitt GIM Assistant Professor Bryant Shuey, MD, MPH (pictured below, middle) has also joined CP3 as a faculty affiliate. Dr. Shuey earned his MD from the University in New Mexico, completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the University in South Florida, then landed at Harvard for a fellowship. His work focuses on evaluating policies that affect timing and effectiveness of treatment for opioid use disorder. He’ll continue that work, as well as his clinical practice, at Pitt. We’re anticipating sharing more accomplishments from this rising star.

Another returning face to CP3 is Wei-Hsuan (Jenny) Lo-Ciganic, PhD, MS, MSPharm (pictured below, right). After earning her PhD in Epidemiology at Pitt, Dr. Lo-Ciganic was CP3’s first postdoc in 2013 (!!), held faculty positions at the University of Arizona and the University of Florida, and is back at the University of Pittsburgh as a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Lo-Ciganic is a leading international expert on applying advanced predictive analytics to develop and to implement overdose risk prediction models. Dr. Lo-Ciganic’s work has taken her all over the world to present talks and teach methods, and we’re thrilled that she’s making Pittsburgh her home base once more.

Research Highlights

New R01s Awarded

CP3 Associate Director Dr. Katie Suda was recently awarded an R01 grant by NIH/NIDCR. Dr. Suda will serve as MPI along with Dr. Muhammad Walji at the University of Texas and Dr. Brad Rindal at HealthPartners Institute. This project, “Informatics Approaches to Understand and Reduce Inappropriate Antibiotic Prescribing by Dentists,” will examine electronic health records to determine how often and why dentists prescribe antibiotics outside of guideline recommendations. Overprescribing of antibiotics can lead to an array of negative health effects, including antimicrobial resistance, allergic reactions, and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff). By using records at two large dental group practices, the project aims to design improvement strategies in order to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing.

Dr. Payel Roy in GIM received her first R01, “Comparative Risk of Oral Complications Associated with Medications for Opioid Use Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Approach.” This project aims to address the gaps in understanding the effects of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) on oral complications. The team will conduct an observational study using large national databases to develop an educational aid to help patients reduce adverse oral health outcomes. Dr. Suda will serve as Co-I on this project.

In the Media

Faculty Affiliate Dr. Lucas Berenbrok spoke with MarketWatch about community pharmacy closures, and how they might negatively impact health outcomes for people who depend on those pharmacies for their medications. Former CP3 postdoc Dr. Serena Guo was also interviewed for the piece. Drs. Berenbrok and Guo have collaborated with former CP3 Associate Director Dr. Inma Hernandez on multiple spatial analyses of pharmacy access and associations with measures of equity. (See here and here.)

In August, CP3 Associate Director and drug shortages expert Dr. Katie Suda spoke with WTAE about how shortages affect patients and how prescribers are coping. Watch the interview here.

CP3 Director Dr. Walid Gellad spoke with Trib Live about recent drug pricing changes, why the ten drugs were chosen for negotiation, and how that might affect patients.” Read the article here.

Presentations

In August, many CP3 affiliates presented at (and attended - see photo below, top left) the ICPE Annual Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

  • PhD student Katherine Callaway Kim presented “Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Incidence of Drug Shortages in the United States.” Katherine received an award for “Most Highly Rated Abstract Submitted by a Student in the Drug Utilization Research Category.”
  • Dr. Katie Suda presented “Association Between Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Drug Recalls and Adverse Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Heart Failure.”
  • MD/PhD student Marisa Millenson (pictured below, right) presented her poster "Misclassification of Metformin and Insulin Exposure Among Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Using Integrated Electronic Health Record and Pharmacy Claims Data."
  • MPH student David Frank (pictured below, bottom left) presented a spotlight poster "Disparities in Guideline-Recommended Pharmacotherapy for Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease by Race, Ethnicity, and Sex:  A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Analysis of Adults in the United States."

Dr. Suda also presented “Antimicrobial Stewardship in Dental Clinics” at ID Week in Boston in October.

Dr. Gellad presented CP3's work on opioid overdose risk prediction and ensuring algorithmic fairness as a panelists at the VA National Artificial Intelligence Institute International Summit for AI in Health Care on September 8th in Washington, DC.

Dr. Jing Luo (pictured below) presented a poster on the design and rationale of the HumAn-1 trial at the October International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) conference in Rotterdam.

Events

We’re looking forward to sharing our suite of risk prediction projects with attendees of the Rx & Illicit Drug Summit in Atlanta in April 2024. Drs. Gellad and Lo-Ciganic will present how our team uses advanced predictive analytics to develop models predicting overdose, and how we work with stakeholders to refine and implement the models into practice.
