Carers Queensland celebrates inclusion and accessibility during International Day of People with DisabilityCarers Queensland celebrated International Day of People with Disability in December, shining a spotlight on the achievements of people with disability, their contributions to their communities, the barriers they’ve overcome, and the work done to break down those barriers. We also looked at how much further there is to go, and what we can do to
realise a future were people of all abilities are respected, valued, and fully included in every part of society. Our IDPwD campaign ‘Celebrating Inclusion. Creating Opportunities’ saw guests at the inaugural Brisbane event listen to people with disability who are breaking down barriers, achieving their dreams, and building a more connected and inclusive community. Panellists included fashion blogger and disability advocate Suzanne Dang, wheelchair motocross champion Tim Lachlan, and Paralympian and teaching assistant Alberto Campbell, speaking about ‘removing barriers’ and celebrating successes in advocating for and making changes to improve access and inclusion for people with disability. Guests were also treated to the special screening of two short films ‘We’ll
Always Have Dance’ and ‘Sunshine’ with the stars of inclusive Bus Stop Films, Allycia and Olivia. Additional special International Day of People with Disability events were also held throughout Queensland, including a showcase spectacular in Ipswich, musical
guests and speakers in Logan, and the Capras Community Care All-Abilities Early Childhood Transition event in Rockhampton.
Podcast: Celebrating access, inclusion, and respect for people with disability In our new special episode of our Choice and Control podcast celebrating International Day of People with Disability, we meet four people with disability who are turning their career dreams into reality: personal trainer Shane Falconer, journalist and radio producer Braedan Jason, freelance virtual assistant Justine Fox, and nature photographer Michelle Taylor-Holmes.
Beyond the SidelinesCarers Queensland’s inaugural Beyond the Sidelines Reference Group has been announced, with eight diverse individuals from across Queensland who will share their knowledge and lived experience of disability to help Carers Queensland identify good practice and highlight future opportunities that will support greater inclusion of people with disability in local sport and recreation communities. The reference group is part of Carers Queensland’s Inclusive Sport and Recreation Communities Project, which aims to increase the representation and participation of people with disability in sport and recreation, both on and off the playing field.
