What NIH Program Officials Can Do for You

NIH Program Officials (POs) are responsible for the programmatic, scientific, and technical aspects of NIH programs and are a key resource for prospective applicants and recipients.

Although POs are scientists and may have previous experience seeking funding and performing research, their current focus is on the stewardship of federal funds in alignment with NIH’s mission and administrative and public policies. As federal employees, they must adhere to specific rules to promote public trust and impartiality.

Having a clear understanding of what POs can and can’t do for you will help you make the most of your interactions.

While identifying opportunities, POs can recommend programs that may be of interest, discuss institute or center priorities, help determine if your proposal is a good fit for a specific opportunity and clarify opportunity requirements, but …

  • Can’t share information not in the public domain
  • Can’t discuss plans for new or potential reissue of funding opportunities not yet released
  • Can’t provide insights into program beyond what is included in the posted opportunity

While preparing your application, POs can pose general, thought-provoking questions, but...

Clinical Research Tip of the Month

CTSI Community Engagement Recruitment and Retention Studio

The Studio embodies a key component of the CTSI Mutually Learning Tri-lateral Ecosystem i.e., (research enterprise, community, healthcare enterprise) as well as the CTSI core principle of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEI&A) towards advancing the health of our community through research and discovery; thus, optimizing the participation of underrepresented and underserved minority populations in the research process.

Recruiting people from diverse racial, ethnic, and other marginalized groups in studies helps to ensure:

Equity – to advance research outcomes for ALL patients, promote equitable access to innovation, and narrow gaps in health equity

Scholarly Rigor – to significantly enhance the generalizability of study results, improve population health, and explore differences across race, ethnicity, and ancestry

Meaningful Engagement – to ask people to participate rather than assume they are not interested or don’t meet the eligibility criteria

Multidisciplinary researchers are provided opportunities to consult with patients, community members, health care providers, population health experts or other key stakeholders via a panel who provide feedback towards development of strategies that enhance the planning, design, implementation, translation or dissemination of research, at the onset and through every phase of the research process.
