Notice of Changes to the Research Now Application Effective from 28 April 2025, several mandatory questions in the Research Now application have been hidden. After consulting with College, a decision was made to remove these questions to streamline the process. A total of seven questions have been hidden from view and no longer need to be answered. However, the data for these questions on previous Research Now application, remains available in the system for reporting purposes. Additionally, the Declaration that must be read and confirmed by the Chief Investigator has been revised and strengthened. Jeff Bleich Centre It’s been a big month at the Jeff Bleich Centre, with events and conversations that put global issues and Flinders expertise at the centre of national and international dialogue. From examining the global implications of the first 100 days of Trump’s return to office, to unpacking the geopolitical forces shaping Australia’s 2025 federal election, the JBC has brought together leading voices to explore the key issues of our time. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Senator Karen Grogan to the Centre for a timely conversation on misinformation, civics, and the challenges facing Australians today. The 2025 Law Research Retreat The 2025 Law Research Retreat was held recently at the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre, Warriparinga Way, Bedford Park. Through presentations, speed dating sessions and group discussions Law researchers shared their work-in-progress, discussed methodologies and refined research narratives. The breadth and quality of the research showcased were notable, and short ‘TikTok’ style videos recorded on the day will provide material for research promotional activities. Overall the Retreat reinforced a strong sense of a vibrant and mutually supportive research community.
Sandra joins Global Dialogue on Climate, Migration and Human Rights in the US Dr Sanzhuan (Sandra) Guo recently spoke at two high-profile events in the US, including panels at the University of Northwestern and the University of Chicago, alongside former Flinders Visiting Fellow and Judge Elect to the European Court of Human Rights, Professor Vasilka Sancin. The discussions explored climate change and migration in international law, with a focus on reframing climate change as a structural human rights issue and evolving legal protections for displaced communities. Fun fact: President Obama taught Constitutional Law for about 10 years at the University of Chicago. 2025 Alumni Awards New for 2025... The John Moriarty AM Impact Award will recognise a Flinders graduate whose exceptional efforts have significantly enhanced the wellbeing, empowerment, and advancement of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. This new award will join the annual Flinders University Alumni Awards, which acknowledge the significant contribution made by Flinders graduates to the University, the community or within their chosen field, locally and overseas. The awards include the prestigious Convocation Medal, the Distinguished Alumni Awards and our Early Career Alumni Awards. John Kundereri Moriarty AM was the first Aboriginal person to graduate from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. John has been awarded a Convocation Medal from Flinders University in 2001, the highest of the alumni awards and was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of the University from Flinders in 2016 in recognition of his significant contribution to sport, the arts, and Indigenous affairs. John Moriarty comes from the Yanyuwa people at Borroloola in the Northern Territory. He was a keen soccer player in his youth, is recognised nationally and internationally in the field of design, has been an active member of various Indigenous political organisations and is a well-known philanthropist.
