Watch: Stadium progress updateIt’s been another busy month of construction progress for One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha. In a new video update released today, Christchurch City Council Project Director Kent Summerfield provides an update on the city’s new 30,000-seat stadium. One of the key milestones for the month has been the roof progress. The giant hydraulic towers that support the roof have been relocated to support a new row of roof trusses being installed across the field of play. Walkways and lighting are being installed in the roof structure, and the fit out to all stands is progressing well. Framing for the food and beverage outlets around the stadium have started to go up in the south stand. Work to prepare for the installation of the façade cladding is tracking well, with the first sheets of steel cladding set to be installed in November. A unique design for both the façade and the stadium's seating was unveiled last week. The Te Kaha Project remains on budget and on track for an April 2026 opening. November construction snapshotThe 350-strong construction team continued to make great strides this month. Check out the progress shots below, taken throughout October. The east stand along Barbadoes Street is shown above. Concrete seating plats are now being installed in the lower stands. Steel radial trusses and radial diaphragm modules (RDMs) are being progressively installed around the perimeter, behind the seating bowl. With four more radial truss roof supports installed over the past few weeks, there are now a total of 33 of 40 in place. The remaining seven will be installed around the north stand over the coming months. Above, is a view of the southeast corner. Above is an aerial view of the northwest stand, where the steelwork is now complete, and the concrete seating plats have been installed. A radial truss is seen in the top right of the frame, prefabricated and ready to be installed. The shot above shows the roof structure progress around mid-October. Two sections of roof are shown supported by hydraulic frames, before the centre section was added. Façade cladding and seats coming soonThe first seats are expected to be installed around April next year - around a year ahead of One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha opening in April 2026. In a first for New Zealand, the seating bowl will feature a unique kowhaiwhai pattern inspired by the hammerhead shark (mangōpare), in black and grey. The hammerhead shark represents strength, tenacity, speed, and agility.
The exterior façade will feature a pattern made up of 800m of steel sheeting in colours representing the Canterbury landscape. The geometric artwork represents the natural features that surround the stadium on each side; Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula, Port Hills, Kā Tiritiri o te Moana Southern Alps, and Maukatere Mt Grey. The cladding installation starts in November on the south stand and we finish up around mid-2025. Faces of Te Kaha: John AlojadoPosition: Brush painter, Cake Commercial Services Day to day I… do a few different jobs including application of fire rated paint, and the polyurethane coat for finishing touches. I also waterblast before painting. The best part of my job... meeting different people on site, talking with them and learning what they do for their daily jobs. Past projects: I worked at Parakiore for one year. I’ve spent a year so far working at the stadium. Outside of work... I am a home person. I like watching movies and series on Netflix, and documentaries. Final stage of Te Kaha Streets work to be decidedChristchurch City Councillors will decide how to proceed with the final stage of roading upgrades around the city’s new stadium at their meeting on 6 November. The first two stages of work are currently underway. The Council applied for funding for a third stage of planned works and has since received advice from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) that the funding is unlikely to be granted through the National Land Transport Programme in the 2024-27 programme. Councillors will consider a report recommending that stage three proceeds as planned at this week's meeting. The report also outlines options to delay the stage three works until after the stadium opens or cancel them altogether. Site progress photosWant to keep track of how construction is progressing? We regularly publish images on the News and Announcements page of our website. There's also a library of monthly photos in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the page. What to expect over the coming monthsThe next six months of the Te Kaha Project will see work continue on the superstructure bowl, roof installation, and internal fit-out. Because of the huge size of the project, the different stages will overlap to streamline the process. That means as one phase of work progresses across the site (working from south to north), the next phase will follow closely behind it. Q4 2024 - Radial trusses will continue to be installed at the northern end of the arena. Roof cantilevers will continue to be installed ahead of the roof steel erection that spans across the field of play. Cladding to the outside of the arena will commence and internal fit-out works will continue in all stands. Metalwork handrails will start being installed in the seating areas. Q1 2025 - The final radial trusses will be installed at the northern end of the arena, and the roof truss installation will continue. Cladding will progress around the arena to the east and west sides towards the north. Internal fit-out works will continue in all stands including bowl metalwork and handrails. External works around the arena will progress behind the cladding progress. You received this email because you are subscribed to receive updates from Christchurch City Council. |
