DESTINATION NSW COMMEMORATES
NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

It was a moving moment when Vivid Sydney launched on 27 May 2022 with First Light – a celebration of our First Nations people – on the first day of National Reconciliation Week.

Shaped by Creative Advisor Rhoda Roberts AO, First Light featured a dance piece by NAISDA and Sharing the Same Life Essence, Gadigal story-telling projections on the southern pylon of Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Lights On launch event also included a warm Welcome to Country by Michael West.

Every night during Vivid Sydney, the Sydney Opera House sails are lighting up with a ground-breaking digital artwork, Yarrkalpa – Hunting Ground, 2021. The stunning animation is a collaboration between the East Pilbara-based Martu Artists and Sydney-based creative technologists Curiious.

National Reconciliation Week runs annually from 27 May to 3 June and commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said: “The First Nations people are a cultural strength of our nation. Every year, National Reconciliation Week brings into focus their incredible 65,000-year legacy and custodian of country."

Destination NSW is proud to develop and deliver an annual state-wide program of workshops, mentoring and other business support to foster the growth and sustainability of the Aboriginal cultural tourism sector.

A strategic pillar of the NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 is to partner with the NSW Aboriginal Tourism Operators Council (NATOC) and Aboriginal tourism stakeholders to make NSW Australia’s premier destination for Aboriginal tourism by showcasing and developing authentic, accessible, high-quality and compelling visitor experiences.

During National Reconciliation Week, Destination NSW staff took part in walking tours of The Rocks with Dreamtime Southern X during National Reconciliation Week as they came together to connect with Aboriginal culture and history and drive reconciliation as a community.

Staff also gathered together on 31 May to hear and share stories of reconciliation from Aboriginal people and discuss Destination NSW's goals for reconciliation and relationship building into the future.

Destination NSW proudly partners with events such as Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) that put the spotlight on First Nation talent.

This year, AAFW opened on 9 May 2022 with a Welcome to Country, followed by a spectacular Indigenous Fashion Projects show and several industry panel discussions on First Nations’ impact on fashion. The festival’s moving closing show featured Clothing the Gaps’ models walking down the runway, holding signs reading where they’re from, such as “I am Comeroi Wodi Wodi” and “I am Eastern Arrente”.

As the team stated after the show: “This collection includes yarns about sovereignty, respecting Country, meaningfully acknowledging traditional custodians and the diversity of Aboriginal Communities…we’re more than merch, we’re merch with a message.”

During the First Nations Fashion and Design talk, Elverina Johnson, a highly respected Gurugulu and Indinji Gimuy woman from Yarrabah in far north Queensland, said the fashion industry has an important role to play in reconciliation.

“You can wear my art, and you can take it anywhere – wear it through Fashion Week or to work, and it can become a conversation starter,” she said.

"If it’s something that you’re wearing that actually stems from the basis of your culture and the stories that you were told and handed down, you can look at that art and say, ‘I’d like to know what that actually means. Tell me about that.’

“And in my view, as an artist, the work that I do through my design, it’s also about another pathway to reconciliation. Because I don’t care – white people, black people, whatever colour wears my art – to me, if you’re willing to wear my art, but you’re not willing to come into my community, this is a starting point because colour and design play a really important part in triggering questions. And the psychology around colour and different design and shapes actually prompts people to feel something.”

SOME NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

The NSW Government has committed $43 million to supporting the transfer of a Sydney Harbour island to the Aboriginal community.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said: “Returning Me-Mel to the Aboriginal community is the right thing to do, and it helps deliver on my commitment of improving outcomes and opportunities for Aboriginal people across all parts of government.

“A big part of my commitment is ensuring the island is remediated before it’s transferred to the Aboriginal community.

Me-Mel is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register and has a rich and diverse array of important Aboriginal, historical and natural heritage values.

Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council Deputy Chair Yvonne Weldon said: “Me-Mel is a place where we can go to be within our culture, pass culture on to our younger generations and share with other people. Me-Mel is an opportunity for truth telling, and it’s about recognising the past and unlocking the future.”

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is now calling for Expressions of Interest to join the Me-Mel Transfer Committee. For further details click here.
