World Health Organization (WHO) guidance on implementing PBM

This practical guidance on patient blood management (PBM) has been released to address the massive global burden of iron deficiency and anaemia, blood loss, and coagulopathy with bleeding. The development of this document involved extensive collaboration among multiprofessional and multidisciplinary international experts dedicated to improving patient outcomes, patient safety and quality of care.

To facilitate the global implementation of PBM, the guidance provides a structured pathway for complex and comprehensive system implementation in large sectors including national healthcare systems. It guides stakeholders through a logical sequence of actions to implement PBM as a national standard of care. The model outlines three phases: preparing the national/jurisdictional health care system for PBM, conducting PBM pilot projects and rolling out PBM nationally/jurisdictionally.

Additionally, to support implementation, the guidance document offers PBM toolkits tailored for different populations and resource levels. These kits provide practical strategies and resources for managing iron deficiency, anaemia, blood loss and coagulopathy, ensuring comprehensive care across diverse healthcare settings.

New STIR report available

The Serious Transfusion Incident Reporting (STIR) system operates under the Blood Matters program, a joint initiative between the Victorian Department of Health and Lifeblood. STIR provides haemovigilance data and case studies to improve recognition and management of transfusion adverse events and makes recommendations for safer transfusion practice. The latest annual and summary report 2022-23 is now available and can be accessed here.

Not part of the Blood Matters network and wondering if this report is worth the read? The short answer is, yes, and especially if you're working in a health service that transfuses.

The report includes 209 validated investigations, 68 procedural events and 141 clinical reactions. Preventable procedural events make up a third of the report. The insights from case studies in the report can help you reflect on your own health service practices.

Join our TP monthly online community

The transfusion practitioner's (TP) monthly online community sessions have had a fantastic start to 2025 with growing monthly attendance and engagement levels. The forums provide an opportunity to support learners accessing the 'Transfusion practitioner microcredentials' - although everyone is welcome. We're excited to share the themes of the next three months presented by transfusion practitioners in various roles around Australia.

  • 7 May 2025 11.30am (AEST) - Christine Akers from Blood Matters and the STIR program will provide a backstage look into the program - report writing and insights into how the shared learnings can help you in your organisation.
  • 11 June 2025 11.30am (AEST) - The BloodSafe eLearning Australia team will update us on all their valuable learnings and discuss how TPs can utilise these resources in their role.
  • 2 July 2025 11.30am (AEST) - You'll hear from Northern Territory TPs on the unique aspects of their role and how challenges are met.
