What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - November

The Central Otago Art Society in association with Creative Communities are bringing
renowned artist Jasmine Clark to Central Otago for a Wire Weaving Workshop at Alexandra Community House on November the 19th and 20th. Over the years, Jasmine has developed various innovative weaving and sculptural techniques inspired by natural forms and processes. Her work utilises a range of natural and recycled materials, including flax, rattan, driftwood, willow, copper wire, pumice and sea bull kelp. This is a not to be missed workshop and is limited to 10 spaces so get in quick! For more information and to book email [email protected]. Tickets are selling fast to the inaugural Cover to Cover event coordinated by the Central Otago District Arts Trust in association with Batemans Books. Come along and enjoy some delicious food and wine and listen to Fiona
Sussman talk about her latest book and much more. Tickets are available from Alexandra Community House, or by emailing [email protected]. We are excited to announce that a public art project examining the political, social and environmental legacy of the Clyde Dam will be coming to Central Otago in late November. The Power that
Flows Through Us, by Dunedin based artist Matthew Galloway will be installed in multiple locations across the district and will employ drone footage, sculpture, political cartoons and a newspaper publication to examine the socio-political context of Robert Muldoon’s Think Big initiative, with a specific focus on the legacy and impact of the Clyde Dam. With contributions from Brian Turner, Tina Ngata, and interviews with Edward Ellison, Kevin Jackson, Neil Gillispie and Duncan Faulkner, the The Power that Flows Through Us updates and continues discussions around the legacy of Think Big; asking us to wade into the grey area between what is lost, and what is gained. Keep an eye out on the Central Otago Arts Facebook page for updates on this. Over the years Central Otago artist's Annemarie Hope-Cross and Eric Schusser have generously invested their time and knowledge to help support the arts in Central Otago. From assisting with exhibitions to teaching classes, happily sharing advice, donating works and much more they have selflessly contributed toward the success of the arts in our community. Since 2017, Annemarie has been bravely fighting breast cancer. Recently, Annemarie and Eric received some unexpected and life altering news and Annemarie is now fighting for her life. The oncologist has said "time is very precious" and that a new treatment is what Annemarie needs at this stage. The trouble is, this new treatment is unfunded. Friends of Annemarie and Eric have set up a Give a Little Page to help Annemarie treat the tumours and ultimately give her more time to share her beautiful art and kindness that she sprinkles around. We would like to share this link in the hope that we can all help to get Annemarie the treatment she needs. Click on the following
link to be directed to the Givealittle page. Despite this major setback, Annemarie and Eric are making every effort to send their joint exhibition 'Thursday's Child' to Barcelona, Spain, toward the end of this year. The exhibition tells the story of Annemarie's cancer journey, and Eric's role as a carer. The works share the couples experiences through their image making, celebrating moments of joy and contemplation, found
amongst the anguish. The exhibition will be held at the highly esteemed FotoNostrum Gallery, the exhibition will be on show from December 8th to January 8th 2023. Please tell your family and friends who may be over that way to get along and take a look! November is shaping up to be a busy one in the arts world - do scroll down to see more of What's on in the Arts in Central Otago in November.
