Summer holidays here we come! The diabetes team hope you all have a fun summer holiday. Here's a few of our favourite tips to encourage you through the school holidays: Keep the family time fun. Stay hydrated, keep your child socialising and doing exercise. Support your teen to be organised with their T1D management when they catch up with their mates. Christmas nutrition tipsChristmas is fast approaching so here's a look at one of our most popular articles from Accredited Practising Dietitian Dr Amelia Harray, offering advice on how to enjoy food and stay on track with managing type 1 diabetes over the festive break.
PCH Christmas ClinicMonday clinic had some 'Christmas Cheer' recently when Father Christmas visited with gifts for our T1D children kindly donated by Professor Jones. Also, in Clinic we had Erin from PCH Volunteers offering play therapy activities.
Cybersecurity awarenessWe know technology is an important part of diabetes management. We also know children and adolescents are often curious explorers of the internet, engaging in online games, social media, and educational platforms. Our social work team have some great tips to improve your cybersecurity awareness. Sports star awardWe are proud to have so many very talented children and youth in our T1D community. Elijah is no exemption. This budding sport star recently graduated from Year 6, and despite being diagnosed with T1D last year, Elijah proved anything is possible taking home the sports star award!
Congrats Prof Liz DavisCongratulations to Professor Liz Davis, Co-director at the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes Department, who was awarded the prestigious Norman Wettenhall Medal by the Australia and New Zealand Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ANZSPED), for her Excellence in Research and Innovation. Kids in the HouseWe are extremely proud of all the passionate youth in our T1D community who attended the JDRF Australia 'Kids in the House' event at Parliament House in Canberra recently to advocate for more research funding. It was a huge success with 106 advocates from across Australia and a big government funding announcement!
New CGM opportunityWe are looking for participants aged 14–26 years to be involved in a new study, testing the performance of a new continuous glucose monitoring not yet available in the Australian market. Participants must have been living with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes for longer than 6 months and have HbA1c of less than 10% in the last 3 months
Changing hypo level? At what level do you treat hypo’s? Diabetes researchers from PCH would like to find out whether treating hypo’s at a lower level than 3.9 mmol/l is safe and makes managing your diabetes easier. They are looking for participants on closed loop, aged 6-18 years to be involved in their Redefining Hypo Thresholds for Hypo Treatment study.
Talking about T1DAdolescents living with T1D often have to make tricky decisions about sharing their diagnosis with others such as deciding who to tell, what to share, and how to say it. A new research study aims to develop our understanding of how adolescents navigate these disclosure decisions, and how we can support them to feel more confident talking to others about their diabetes. Recruitment for this project will begin in early 2025.
The Wellbeing projectEmbrace and the Rio Tinto Children’s Diabetes Centre staff are working on The Wellbeing Project, a mental health intervention for young people who have experienced medical trauma. The intervention hopes to boost diabetes resilience and lower the impact of diabetes stress in teens living with type 1 diabetes. Recruitment for this project will begin in early 2025.
