What others are reading...Flint kill creek: stories of mystery and suspense by Joyce Carol Oates An interesting, insightful and disturbing collection of diverse short stories. Extremely readable but some disturbing content. The Limestone road by Nicole Alexander Fantastic read, best book I have read for some time. I couldn’t put it down, finished it off in one day. Truly recommend this one! The last fashion house in Paris by Renee Ryan I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main female characters were strong, brave and interesting. Set in Paris after falling to the Nazis during WW2 made it even more interesting. The ethnic cleansing was shocking, the suspense mounted, and it was quite believable. Hatchet island by Paul Doiron I have read all of Doiron’s Mike Bowditch series. This is as good as the others, outdoor adventure and mystery combined. I recommend his books to anyone who likes strong characters and excellent settings. Dream count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Superbly written but warning - this book contains traumatic events with sexual violence and murder. The story of Chiamaka, a Nigerian living in America, her friends and a young housekeeper, their relationships and the events that shape their natures, working lives, upbringing and lovers. Staff recommendations...Monumenta by Lara Haworth This compulsively readable first novel from filmmaker and political researcher Lara Haworth, tells of an old house in Belgrade awaiting demolition to make way for a monument. But to which massacre? With fierce intellect and mordant wit she creates a beautiful set, peopled with fascinating characters. Each reflects the terrors, dissolution, and shifts in both a family, the cultural zeitgeist, and events in eastern Europe. It's literature as a small monument in itself. We are the stars by Gina Chick The magnificent, indomitable Gina Chick brings us a story seething with life, while holding death equally tenderly. She shares her loving childhood, tempestuous youth, and years as a creative hunter-gatherer, mother, lover, and rewilding facilitator with generosity and sacredness. Read the book or e-book or listen to her narrate on talking book or e-audiobook. Three days in June by Anne Tyler Anne Tyler's new novel is the sweetest story of a little family during a special time, guarding their hearts before stepping over thresholds into new embraces. And there's a stray cat, similarly, protecting its dignity while it considers which domestic arrangement to choose. Funny, delightful, immaculately told, a joy to read. Available in the fiction section or as an e-audiobook.
Rain didn’t stop the Storytime fun!Mayor Nikki Williams joined us for a fabulous National Simultaneous Storytime, sharing smiles and stories as we connected over The Truck Cat — a wonderful, illustrated story about the power of community. It was the perfect reminder that even on rainy days, we’re stronger and happier together! In the lead-up to the event, kids eagerly hunted for Truck Cat with their bingo cards, scouring the library for the hidden Truck Cats. Did you spot one?
King's Birthday Closure The library will be closed for the public holiday on Monday 9 June. Library after-hours chutes will remain open.
