Major concrete pours for Te Kaha to begin later this monthWork on Te Kaha, Canterbury’s Multi-Use Arena, will hit a new milestone later this month when the first of the foundations’ major concrete pours is completed. Te Kaha Project Delivery chief executive David Kennedy, says the lead contractor, BESIX Watpac, will oversee about 40 large concrete pours between 27 January and mid-August, as work begins on the arena’s substructure. “These concrete pours are significant as they signal the start of the main construction of Te Kaha,” says Mr Kennedy. Latest site camera image and drone footageAbove is a photo that was taken of the Te Kaha site from BESIX Watpac's offices this week. You can see the steel framework of the arena's southwest corner substructure (foundations and underground supports) beginning to take shape, in advance of the first major concrete pour later this month. The large 300-tonne capacity crawler crane in the middle of the shot takes care of all the heavy lifting. It is currently helping install the reinforcing, and will also be used to lift the concrete formwork and structural steel later in the project. In the drone footage below (taken yesterday 12 January) you can also see the ground improvement works continuing to progress across the site. The three rigs are now working on the northern and eastern stands, with this part of the project now past the halfway mark. What to expect over the coming monthsThe next six months of the Te Kaha project will be mainly focused on completing the ground improvement work and progressing the arena's substructure (foundations and underground supports), then commence on the superstructure bowl. Because of the huge size of the project, the different stages will overlap to streamline the process. That means as one phase of work progresses across the site (working from south to north), the next phase will follow closely behind it. Q1 2023 - Ground improvement continues. Q1-Q4 2022 - Work continues on Te Kaha's substructure. Q1 2023 - Construction begins on superstructure bowl.
